First ones for a while

I don't like this mono image David. It just doesn't look right to me for some reason. I think the square crop does look a bit better. will look at the colour version.

I've looked at the colour version and I feel the image hasn't converted very well. Sorry

David, you have given the image the title "Ullswater Light" so, presumably that indicates your intention. For me it is not actually working, because some of the water in the middle of the shot is a bit lost among the background tones, and the untidy foreground distracts from the wonderful light from the sky to the lake. A conversion from colour using a cyan filter, plus a 2:1 crop down, go some way towards a solution for me:

MrB has make a significant improvement to the original (IMO) - cropping to lose part of the foreground changes the way I see the scene. Having said that I quite liked the original too (preferred it to the colour one )

I'm going to go against popular opinion here an say that I love the original shot, the un-cropped B&W version. IMHO it works much better than the colour version and has much more dramatic impact. I prefer your original crop as it has the lead in line of the stream which takes you eye down the valley into the lake and then to those glorious light beams. Also the bright spot on the Rock in the foreground, the bright lake and the sun breaking through the clouds give a trio of interest points to keep you eye in the picture. The detail in the foreground is brilliant and far from being distracting, I like it.

For me, cos I like that sort of thing, the only thing I'd do is increase the sharpness and clarity a little. Add a bit of exposure and bring back the blacks to give a slightly increased contrast. But these are just small suggestions for an already stunning picture...

Wow, thanks to you all for the great feedback on this image, I always knew it was a 'difficult' one, but for me it wasn't a case of 'rescuing' it because I knew it had all the basic ingredients. It was just a case of processing it in a way that works, but that is actually more difficult than it sounds. The colour version in particular seems to have created an impact in the Gallery, but on reflection when I look at it against all of the other versions I think it just needs the foreground toning down a little and maybe a crop (as suggested by MrB) would also be beneficial.

The light on the day when I shot this image was spectacularly good, but shooting into introduced some challenges!
