Firmware

How do I tell what firmware version my K100D Super has as I want to use higher than 2GB Cards but dont want to buy then find they won't work. Can anybody advise me please.

Just hold down the menu button while turning the camera on and the firmware version will be displayed on the screen.

There have been no firmware updates for the K100D Super.

The K100D is a different model, so not everything you read about it will apply to your camera.

All Pentax models that are not SDHC compatible with the original firmware have firmware updates available to make them SDHC compatible. You would install one of these yourself. Therefore you can make any size of SD card work with any Pentax digital SLR.

OK, I forgot the *ist D doesn't take SD cards at all!

Dreadful things. I'm glad Pentax changed to SD, especially as most laptops seem to have SD slots.

At the time the original *ist D was released SD cards were a new form of memory and no body was sure how they were going to last, so Pentax like other camera firms chose the tried and readily available CF cards.

Thank heavens they saw the light and changed quickly to the SD format!

I'm in full agreement with you George, my MP3 player also has a SD slot and the ability to transfer files from a card to the MP3 memory.

I use a K10D and have always been more than happy with 2 GB cards. I find them more than adequate for a days shooting in PEF raw.

Also I worry slightly about card failure, so prefer more smaller cards than one big one!

There was a discussion on this here a couple of years ago, and most people agreed with you. I've just ordered an 8GB card, and am wondering if I did the right thing.

I have an eight gig card and (a) it has not failed yet (b) I have only filled it once and (c) it has made me terribly lazy about remembering to delete files off the card when I have downloaded them.

When I am travelling and cannot easily back up the files on my laptop I like to leave them on the card too in case of disaster. Once I get home I copy everything to a second external hard disk and wipe the card.

7 Day shop have Toshiba 4gb for £6 delivered. Very good cards Japanese made and a lot faster than the specification. I'm getting 12.7 mb/s from the card to my PC with Pentax PEF + JPG that's faster than my Lexar 133x which do 11.2 mb/s. Lexars are also good but dearer.

I'm not sure if that should be mb or MB I mean Megabytes/ per second

I bought 2 Sandisk Ultra 2 cards from play.com for 9.99 each delivered.

4gb capacity with 10 MB/sec read/write and they flip open with a built in USB connector, so no need for card readers! And at least buying direct from play.com you wont get ripped off with fake sandisk cards like you do on ebay!!!

Toshiba's white cards are faster than their blue ones, though they're getting hard to find now.

I also use Sandisk Extreme III 20 MB/s cards from play.com.

Big emm for mega, big bee for byte, little bee for bit.

Until the weak plastic hinge gives up the ghost, nice idea, but poor design.
