File transfer: USB cable or SD card reader?

Thats only UHS-1 which won't read the new high speed UHS-2 cards which go unto 280mb/s read speeds

Which Pentax camera takes the new high speed UHS-2 cards?

The cards themselves need an extra line of contacts which makes them superfluous on just about everything

They also cost £80

Not many cameras yet but that's not really important if getting the images int your computer Asap is important as it is for me then every little helps

I've ordered a Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 Card Reader anyway, so when it comes I'll compare it with the Transcend using a Samsung 32GB Class 10 UHS-1 and a Sandisk Extreme 45MB/s cards. I had a 95MB/s Toshiba, but can't find it.

So far the Transcend is faster than a Lexar Dual Reader USB3 and an Orico USB3.

It's a pity cameras don't take Flash Drives you can get a 64GB Drive that does 245MB/s for only £27

For SD cards both laptop and PC have SD slots.

For CF I use the card reader.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I shall now order one of the card readers, plus a couple of faster SD cards. The tide of opinion has obviously moved away from cable connection in favour of card readers.

I suppose I could have specified a card reader slot when I ordered my Dell Optiplex a couple of years ago, but didn't think of it at the time. And it only has one USB 3.0 slot: it is at the back of the tower and permanently occupied by my external WD hard drive for backups. On the other hand, the much cheaper minitower that we recently bought for my wife comes with a card reader slot at the front as standard.

Picstop are currently doing a fast 60MB/s Sandisk Extreme 32GB for £13.99 delivered. They also do it via ebay. Pictop have always been main dealers for Sandisk so all their cards are genuine.

This site doesn't say what reader they have used, but they've got 91 MB/s read and 79 MB/s write off the older 32GB Extreme 45 MB/s card

You can fit extra USB 3.0 slots via a PCI-E card if a slots available. They are the same in terms of performance.

I've used an Inateck one on an old USB2 board before. This one doesn't need the extra lead from the PSU. £13.99

The base station for my old Lenovo (X60s, should you be interested) has a built in card reader. Unfortunately, I've never managed to get it to work (must look into that...).

So I have a sort of empty USB memory stick that I put the SD card in, then stick it in a USB socket. Not gallopingly fast (only USB2), but it works. And if there are a lot of pics, it gives me time to make a cup of tea while they upload.

Hmmm, my new 8.1 test machine has a USB3 socket. I must check out if it's quicker to use that and pass the files over the wi-fi to the big drive...

Received the Kingston Reader nice heavy metal...... bit on the big size.

I can only find a 16GB Sandisk Extreme 45MB/s card + a Samsung 32GB Class 10 UHS-1 for testing. (Sure I had a 32GB Extreme somewhere? )

Both readers are very close and I'm happy to use either. I would suggest buying both because they are so cheap.

The Transcend is slightly faster from Card to PC, but from PC to Card copying 500MB of DNG and JPG's it's TWICE AS FAST! (31.2MB/s v 14.8MB/s).

For what we need DNG and JPG's to PC they are the same. Tested 454MB's Card to Fast Ramdisk = 31 files in 11.1 secs = 41.3 MB/s

The Kingston MobileLite G4 has slow Random Read 512KB (tried 3 times) which is unusual, but we don't use that a lot.

Edit: Just noticed the Random Write 512KB for the Sandisk Extreme is very slow and it's the same on earlier tests. We rarely use 512kb files.

The test I posted above LINK only got 1.785 MB/s so there's was even worse. My Samsung was 14x faster. Unless it's a bug in Crystal Disk Mark?
