The distracting thing is another person, it was a really tight crowd.

On the positive side she's a lovely looking lady, with a fantastic hat which she is clearly very brave to wear out in public!
Unfortunately the softness is too pronounced on her face for me. It looks more like camera shake, is that possible? If it is softness it looks pretty bad to me - sorry

I agree it looks soft and I find the face looming top right unpleasant. Would a crop ta=hat eliminates or reduces the face be better with less space 'behind' the subject?

I agree it's soft rather than crisp, but I actually don't mind that in this case. It's possible it's soft because of the fine rain and generally misty nature of the day, but whatever the reason I still find her quite striking.
A crop? Maybe so. I decided to keep in some of the other face to show contexxt and that she was surrounded by people. A tighter crop is a totally valid alternative that many might well prefer.

I could live with the lack of crispness on its own, although of course it would be better sharper.
But the red at the front of the hat, and on the brim, looks rather burned out to me, so the detail is lost, and the colour in the burned out area, although striking, looks a bit artificial.
For me, that tips it over into the "not quite" category.

I like it, well done. makes me want to know what she's thinking about...
got a question or two about the lens....
does it make any noises (ie gears or motors whining) when you turn the focus ring while off camera?
How does the zoom ring feel?

The focus ring has a zipping noise if turned quickly, not loud but definitely there.
The zoom action is smooth and firm, just right in fact, and it doesn't creep when carried. It has a very soft swooshing sound as it's zoomed.
Is that what you expected?

had a look at a second hand one yesterday.. thinking I'll pass... seems wonky... zoom feels scratchy and rough, af ring sounds and feels like you'd expect it to if it were still attached to an mz5 with the af engaged (big no-no) didn't have a body to test it on, but it definately wasn't Pentax Quaility Feel, if you know what I mean.

The softness on this one works for me - I like the overall effect
I have the Pentax 55-300 and it is perfect - no noise or creep.

I think this portrait is quite striking and I am quite happy with the softness.
In my opinion a toning down of highlights: centre top both sides of a collar, the 3 tunic studs/button on the left and the very bright side of a flower on the front of the hat, would improve the picture.
