ebay fees UP AGAIN....from today..

Hi,

From today, ebay final value fees (FVF) for private sellers on auctions goes up to a flat rate of 10%. This is charged on the final high bid price.

Before it was 8.75% on the first £29.99 of the final sale price and only 5.25% on the rest over £29.99....so this is a huge increase, on top of about 3 other increases in the last 18 months.

Any items over about £100 will now have a massive hike in fees.

eg Item sells for £200...

BEFORE..8.75% of 29.99 (£2.62) + 5.25% of 170.01 (£8.93) TOT £11.56 FEE

NOW.....10% of all the £200 = £20.00 FEE

Before the hike, you could approximate that ebay + paypoos fees were about 17% combined on most items.

I guess the combined fee is now something like 20-25%

I'm not happy about the FVF going up either, but it's only fair to mention that some listing fees are going down too, some to nothing at all.

The PayPal fee is no more than 3.4% + 20p. I don't know where your "20-25% combined" figure is coming from.

How do they justify this? Last figures I saw for ebay they were virtually printing money, so unless they made some bad sub-prime mortgage investments they really are just squeezing a client base with a diminishing cash flow. The 2nd hand market has always flourished in a recession, but this is just cynical.

Seriously though I will now carefully reappraise what (and if) I sell on eBay

We whinge about it, but still use eBay because it's one of the best forms of advertising available.

eBay can afford to raise the fees while we continue to use them. The fees will only go down if the number of customers goes down, or if they are made to by a new law (which we don't have yet for this kind of thing).

They are poorer, as net profits for Q4 2008 were a mere £283m

I'v not used them to buy or sell since 2006, stopped then because of fees.

...not exactly a big deal...reducing listing fees by 10-20 PENCE whilst hiking the FVF by lots of POUNDS...I dont see any celebration in the listing fees drop.

...not quite right. The figures you quote are the BASIC UK-UK fees. If you sell overseas, the rates increase and also alter depending on the payment method used.

Many ebayers have calculated that the combined fee 'take' of ebay + Paypal was approx 17% BEFORE the fee hikes...my guess of the new combined take was the 20-25%...

....also a wrong assumption. Over the last financial year ebay has for the first time in its history lost customers...all sellers are down in number...especially private sellers. The number of listings has dropped and also their profits are down.

I don't know who or where these "many eBayers" are you mention, but I've never noticed such high fees as they claim.

If anybody is unhappy with the fees, then the obvious answer is not to use ebay/paypal.

At least you know what the fees will be upfront, and as it's the same for all sellers, I don't see what the problem is really.

There is always the forum here for Pentax camera gear, worked very well for me!

The higher they make their fees, the more attractive an alternative internet auction site will become to the sellers and if the sellers move so will the buyers.

First time I've looked at eBid for a couple of years, seems that the free listings are causing people to take the piss... £934 for a K20D and 18-55mm kit lens link others are charging over £40 for delivery on a single camera.

eBid need to sort their business out very quickly.

I buy and sell quite a bit on ebay and the fact that you get charged once for listing then once for selling and then paypal also charge you for receiving a payment.Especially since paypal is an ebay company its outrageous that you get charged three times for selling 1 item and if that item is say a camera or lens you could be looking at quite a fee. damn em!
