Shortly fees for selling on Ebay will increase, see below, will this deter you from using Ebay?

Detail

Which categories are affected by the fee increase?
On 3 May the final value fees for products in the following categories will increase from 3% to 5%:

Computing
Consumer electronics
Photography
Mobile & home phones
Video games, excluding games

Too me this is a big leap, and I shall make every effort to avoid using Ebay.

eBay gives us a massive potential marketplace that is unequalled and makes the whole world available, so although any increase is always unwelcome, I will still be using the site as much as possible.

An alternative is Amazon Marketplace, which has its place but is a slightly different style of selling.

I thought Final Value Fees were 10% anyway?

I've checked my last 20 or so sales and everything has been 10%, including photographic items. I sold a lens for £110 a couple of weeks ago and the FVF was £10.99.

I wish they would go to 5%.

I have always avoided selling on Ebay as much as possible but I do buy there and from Amazon (which just has to be the easiest purchase and check-out system around - especially of you have registered and can do the One-Click thing. Buying used anything on Amazon (I buy mostly books) is brilliant and the condition of the gear superb and well as being great value.

It opens up the market to make buyers available from pretty much anywhere, so in practical terms is it an exaggeration?

The American continents, Europe, Russia, The Far East, Australasia.....I don;t know about the South Pole, but I can't think there are many exclusions!

I stopped selling on eBay ever since they started their "the seller is always right and you can't even leave negative feedback for them when they try to rip you off" policy. And the fact they force you to use PayPal.

I only sell on Amazon or Gumtree (which is owned by PayPal). That way I know from the start what I will receive.

I was not thinking in geographical terms per se, as the vast majority of the world's population either doesn't have any access to a computer (let alone Ebay) or the money or means to buy anything if they did. It is really only the privileged 'wealthy' countries ... and population-wise that's a relatively small percentage of the world. I guess I'm being pedantic

I'm confused. I though it was the buyer was always right on Ebay ... item didn't arrive, in poor condition, not as described etc. etc. and relatively easy to get their money back ? Do I have the wrong impression ?

It does open up a large market place yes, but who posts items overseas, I don't.

The best market for cameras and lenses is overseas. There isn't really much of a problem sending to Europe and even beyond, and the price will be much better than just sticking to the UK.

Too busy ranting! Yes, I meant the buyer is always right policy. I gave up after I sold a brand new lens and the buyer claimed it was broken (it wasn't I checked it before it was sent) and accused me of being a liar and a thief. His feedback was 7, mine was over 500. He left me negative comments but there was nothing I could do!

If you don't then you are probably getting a much smaller price for your items.
