There are a couple of things that need to be checked with a K-r to shoot with manual lenses. Firstly you need you need to set 'use aperture ring' to 'permitted' in order to use manual lenses.
Press the menu button.
Press the left button on the four-way controller once to get to the Custom Settings menu
Press the down button on the four-way controller and select Using Aperture Ring
Press the down button on the four-way controller, select Permitted and press the OK button.
Press the Menu button to exit the Custom Settings menu
You need to set the focal length of the lens when you turn the camera on, though this isn't vital if not accurate.
Are your old manual lenses M or A? Do they have aperture rings and, if so, do they have an 'A' on the ring?
With M lenses you should be able to simply set the aperture ring to the desired setting. Select manual (M) on the dial on the camera.
When you have composed the shot press the green button once. This will take a reading for you and set the shutter speed to match your chosen aperture. I tend to find that this underexposes a little so usually reduce the selected shutter speed by a couple of steps.
A lenses can be set to A on the aperture ring and then you should be able to use AV mode to select both aperture and shutter speed.
Hope this helps. If it doesn't come back and let us know what happens if you follow the above.

Hi, thank you. I have already set the custom menu to accept my lenses which do not have an "A" on them so I assume are "M"
I always set the focal length when turning the camera on but what I have NOT done is press the green button before taking the shot. Basically what you are saying is that I have to press two different buttons for each shot? That could be my downfall thank you, I will test that although it could be tricky for a moving target!!
Thanks very much, I will post my findings.

There shouldn't be any problem with a moving target. All the press of the green button does is give you an exposure reading. As long as you point it vaguely in the direction of what you want to shoot it will give you a ballpark figure.
It might not always be absolutely correct, but should prevent the dark pictures you have been getting.
Manual focus with a moving target is another matter.....

Haha no kidding about the manual focus - I assumed that once set to infinity everything would be fine but in trying to focus on the moon yesterday I found it was not far enough away to set the lens to infinity
Luckily the moon moves relatively slowly compared to my position here on the ground!!

Thank you very much, photos are now brighter but I agree a slight adjustment of shutter speed makes things even better. I cannot find that info on the green button in the manual, thanks for the information.
Now I just need to find out where all the dirt is that makes my viewfinder view look like I am watching a flock of blackbirds!! The sensor is clear and I can't see anything obvious on the mirror so I guess it's the "sighting thingy" in the top of the camera. Sorry for the technical wording

'Permitted' setting as above then Page 197 lists green button modes, for this Menu 4 on your KR camera, Green button (third one down) then select Optical preview. Excellent facility with manual lenses and/or manual extension tube work.

Thanks Bill, if I do that does it still also set the shutter speed for my desired aperture setting?
Thanks.

On manual exposure setting using the green button will show current aperture and shutter settings in the viewfinder with to the right the light meter setting through the lens (stopped down by the green button action) as expressed in stops (thirds if the camera is set for that) + or -. A solid line will appear in the viewfinder under aperture or speed according t which you have selected.
You can toggle adusting aperture or shutter speed with the =/- button on top of the camera near your shutter release and the wheel.
I hope that makes sense as it's great fun to do with any lens, especially for mcro work.
In other words you've turned your Pentax back thirty years. Only thing missing is the little analogue metering needle!

Oh I loved that little needle I still have my K1000 with a roll of film inside, no idea what could be on it as I have lived here 10 years and never used it!!

Get it developed already! !0 year old film may or may not come out but exciting to hope it does!Oh I loved that little needle I still have my K1000 with a roll of film inside, no idea what could be on it as I have lived here 10 years and never used it!!
You'll probably need to get the seals replaced and fit a new battery (hope the old one hasn't leaked) but chances are your K1000 is still working, as they're built like tanks!
I came into film photography the wrong way round having shot digital first, but it has deffo helped me become a bit better (I still suck but am much improved...)

Yep, film can be successfully developed decades after it's theoretically expired.

My problem is that when I use my old manual lenses on the K-r I am unable to set the aperture number manually and all my photos are very dark. In some cases (particularly my Cosina 200mm) I cannot compensate enough with the exposure setting and even at +3 the photos remain far too dark
Please any advice is appreciated.
