Early Harvest

First trip abroad to Majorca with my new MX-1. We stopped in a quiet country lane for tea at about 5 o'clock, as any Englishman will, and took this.
Shot in Raw and edited in Elements 11. The camera saves RAW files in the chosen format in this case, 16:9.

And in monochrome.

The first version is very pleasing - especially the contrast between the golden foreground and the angry sky.

For me the mono version lacks the major element that makes the first version so good - contrast. Not just the lack of colour contrast between land and sky but the sky itself looks to me to need a bit of a contrast boost and the image as a whole feels a bit lacking compared to the colour version.

That said - viewed in isolation without seeing the colour version - I would probably be saying 'nice mono'.

First one definitely. Eye popping contrast between the amazing sky and the field with hay rolls. Like the way the hay rolls pull you into the photo and towards the angry sky. Nice.

I also like the first, apart from the orange vignetting

The first for me. Looks like a natural colour pop

Agreed that the colour is stronger. I like the composition here, especially the space you've given the sky and the distribution of the elements throughout. The thin reflections off the tops of the bales really makes it also

Thanks for your comments. Just for once I prefer the colour version as well.

Proves the point that being in the right place at the right time with a reasonable camera, blessed with decent light and an interesting sky, any mug can take an acceptable picture.

You would not believe how many, dull, flat, short-shadowed, bleached, boring pictures I managed to take...
Best wishes,

Andrew

I think the first one would look better with a touch of colour in the sky.

Oh yes I would - been there - done that - read the book - eaten the pie....etc

You should see the set I shot yesterday evening attempting to get something to enter in to the competition (something I have not done for a long time).
