Kris was right. Colour popping can look awfully artificial but it just lifts the monochrome shot here.
I expect there's lots of laces like that in your area. My son did a photo essay in Newport, based around the transporter bridge and Blaenavon, for his A2 level photography. He used real FP4 film and a proper darkroom...

Is this the kind of crop you meant?
Emily, Of course you're right: I start with the wide view then sort of home in on the details. There are a couple of other close-ups I didn't include for fear of over-egging the pudding, so to speak. I too prefer the colour set: it's grim enough without resorting to the melancholy of monochrome. (But the popped colour one works, I think.)
There must be loads of interesting old industrial sites in Tennessee, old saw mills etc.
