Can anything be done with this ?

Taken as a view across the city . I like the hills , I like the green roof of the cathedral - but the bottom L corner is messy [ believe it or not it's a school building ]

This is straight from the camera - yes it could probably do with being brightened a little - but that's not a problem - the horrible modern multi coloured school building is.

Not an expert, but a crop or de.saturation on the building would mabey help?

Easiest and quickest in Photoshop or Elements:

1) Add a new blank layer
2) Set the layer blend mode to "Colour"
3) Pick a soft brush
4) Alt-click on the building you don't mind the colour, and paint over the ones you do. Their colour will magically change

Failing that you'll have to mess around with cloning etc and spend a good hour or two getting it right. The above method should take about 5 minutes max

HTH!

Thanks Matt

Am at my class tonight - will see what I can do there since I've not done my homework this week

At least this will then become a very practical teaching/practice session for me

My first thought was 'What a lot of sky!'

You'd do well to crop out most of the top half to improve this image.

Indeed - I did say it was straight out

I was supposed to be getting sky pics as well - so I thought that this would do

Yes will crop a lot of that away - my normal method of editing afterwards is always to duplicate the pic - and work on the duplicate , just in case , you understand

Hi Angela,
Forget about the school and concentrate on the church, the 4 flats, the distant mountains and the sky. Work on the contrast and colours of those key elements and crop away the rest. Than you get something like this.

Hope you don't mind.

No, Martin ! You couldnt do it
Never mind
I just finished my crop- picking up even less of this pic.

Techno,
It has been interesting to follw your struggle and will of learning ! You are great !

my opinion
You have to choose, what the pic is about. Sky or the nice green cathedral roof + mountains. Here you cant get both. The block houses make up an interesting row while the mountains being as background.

About the sky : It is quite dull here. Gradient will give some nicer effect here. I have not done this. I leave this for masters. Wasnt it Prieni, who explaned and did it somewhere in the PF ?

Really I'd want to reshoot this from a different spot when the sky's more involving. The interest is concentrated on a narrow sliver of city scape and mountains. It's a record of the time and season, but hard to make into a decent photograph, I fear.

Sorry.

Andrew

Indeed Andrew, if you could revisit and try not to get the awful school in your shot that would be the best solution.

Funny to see how focus we can be on trying to make a shot better afterwards while it might be better just to reshoot it again.

Hehehehe

I have my homework for next time - play with this shot .

I'm to deal with the colours on the school [ we tried a bit of that tonight and it was surprising the difference it made ] and I need to do something with the sky - he showed how you could drop another one in - so if it's decent tomorrow morning I'll have another go at it .

Oh and we are also to try a Macro for next week - either with a macro lens which I don't have , or using a long lens - trying to work out how to do that I have to admit - but the first thing to do is the shot of the Campsies .

From where I took the pic - about 50 yards from my house it's about 7 miles across the city and then out to the Campsies I'm at the top of a 1 in 8 hill .

Seems you've something to do this week

About macro, actually your 18-55mm has a greater magnification then your 50-200mm.
Put your camera on manual focus set the focus the closest it can get and the 18-55 on 55mm that way you would have the greatest magnification at 1:2.9 (1cm on the sensor would be 2.9cm in real life the 50-200 will only do 1:4.2).
Use your body to focus the lens so move in closer or further away and press the shutter on the right time. Also make sure you've enough light, maybe even use your flash wirelessly and use an F-number around the f/8 or maybe even higher but f/8 is a good starting point to see what happen.

About subjects... you can make quite abstract things of doing macros from objects you've at home, maybe that's something?

I'll get the Campsies pic done first and then think about the other .

I'm actually not very creative - so thinking about a subject isn't very easy for me - sounds strange but true .
