Take your bodies and a kit lens WR18-55. First visit of your trip should be to Clarky and hire parts of his collection, he must have spares.
Lurking is shirking.!

Clarky's Pentax rentals R us......
I am thinking more on combat issue trousers. Lenses in pockets, check in, pass the weight check, then put the lenses in the roller bag before passport control.
If you have a better idea.....then fire away.
Regards

I used to do that kind of thing. Got hacked off when I appeared with a single small bag and they insist it going in the hold and behind be a huge haystack with overcoat gets to take on whatever.
So I used to change into all the heavy gear, trousers, boots, coat, jumper, hats etc carry a paperback, camera in pocket, bottle of water (how long ago).
I only fly locally at the moment and they get you to stand on the scales after your bags!!!! So no 300mm F2.8 in the socks.
Saw your leg off?

Careful - they may weigh again at the gate!
Always a challenge what to take.
I would contact Qantas and explain you have a lot of expensive photographic equipment you need to take. Explain it will fit in a bag which meets carry-on sizes but will exceed the weight limit. Ask if they will allow it. If they say no ask if they will accept liability for it being lost, stolen or damaged in the hold.
Usually they will then decide to allow it. Do it a least two days before you fly though.
If not then I'm afraid you will have to make some compromises with regard to what you take with you.

I considered that Gwyn, but didn't want to flag it up as they are liable to make a note of my enquiry.
It's winter over there at the moment so a large coat should not seem unreasonable....
I'll not be flying Qantas after this though. KLM offer 5Kgs more.

Locally, Isles of Scilly, tiny plane (I'd post but I have them either on DLUX3 or Yashica!). Its a bit like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. some planet which was ravaged by damage from tourists. They weigh you on the way in and if you are heavier on the way out, its surgically removed from your body. Not quite that extreme yet.dougf8 wrote:

The aircraft are small and they put you on by weight to trim the flight.
I'm surprised some low cost airlines aren't doing this.

You might be able to put a few lenses in a Peli case locked in the hold? Should be OK I would imagine. Perhaps you'll have to pay a bit extra.
How are you going to cart all this kit over that dusty convict ridden island? (Home from home)

Now it's really hit the fan.
The lightest, cabin approved wheely case I have is 3.5Kgs. My laptop is 3.5Kgs. It's "gonna" rattle like hell in there....so it up to the loft for my rucksack or plastic carrier bags. M&S, BHS, or ASDA, Morrisons or TESCO.
Too many choices...

Based there for some time so a V8 pickup and a Lowepro from my main luggage. Also covering Middle East and Asia. You might be able to put a few lenses in a Peli case locked in the hold? Should be OK I would imagine. Perhaps you'll have to pay a bit extra.

My NC10 normally goes as well as the Acer! Acer stays at base whilst the NC10 and two USB portables go field side.I hear Netbook.
I quickly need a 16-300mm f/2.8 to fit the K7....
Anyone?

Don't give them ideas. Ryanair charges for everything else!I'm surprised some low cost airlines aren't doing this.
KLM do charge for an extra seat if you are very large, as do a lot of airlines. They will throw you off if you can't put the arm rest down fully and haven's booked a spare seat.
They also charge for a second checked bag now.
Personally I would be happy to pay for carry-on and not pay for checked bags. It would make getting on and off a plane much quicker as everyone would stop trying to do a three week holiday with carry-on only, and leave room in the overheads for my gear. Can't see it happening though.

Then noticed that carry on weight allowance is only 7Kgs!!!!!!!
I had assumed that most international carriers were all around the same limit as KLM, 12Kgs. Not Qantas...
Soooo, I now have a dilemma. Which bodies and lenses to take for an extended tour to Australia.
