Digital & Film (Nearly) in Kirkcudbright

Last week we were out in the field around Kirkcudbright, in Dymfries & Galloway. Kept in touch thanks to Mobile Broadband, although the local mobile system was GPRS and therefore quite slow.

Shot masses of digital images, some of which are unfolding and have been for a week or so on ePHOTOzine, and really really tried to finish off some Velvia 50 films.

Sue managed 10 film frames and I managed....zero.

When you want images for instant use and distribution it is just so difficult these days to find the will to shoot film....all good intentions came to nought.

I have the same problem. Until late last year I regularly went about with a film camera, but these days I find it hard to find the motivation. I love the big bright view finders on film cameras. I love the vivid saturated colours you can get with Velvia. Changing lenses in the field without the worry of dust on the sensor. The compact size of the ME super sized camera. The list goes on...

But...

Convenience wins every time now. Instantly being able to share photo's with friends and family - priceless.

That said I have ordered a couple of rolls of Kodachrome and live in Stockholm - very picturesque. One day this summer I plan to take a day off and do a bit of "old school" photography. Maybe it will rekindle the interest. Maybe it will just confirm it time to put some great old kit up on eBay rather than see it just get dusty on a shelf.

If you do sell, the ideal I think is to find someone who is going to actually use the item.

Just recently I sold a Kodak Aero-Ektar lens on eBay to a buyer in Australis, who has refurbished it and is now happily using it on a large format camera. The perfect sale for all parties. Much better than the last 50 years that the lens has been unused!

To be honest, this is the only reason I have been dragged kicking and screaming into the DSLR age - the ability and convenience to upload images to a website and send them by email easily.

The flip side of this 'convenience' is that we now have thousands of family pictures of the kids growing up the last few years which will probably never be printed and therefore never reviewed and enjoyed like the old ones in photo albums and framed on the walls. Everything has its price
