OK, just mentioned something in a PM that made me think it worth a mention.

How many, honestly, have taken their camera out with just one fixed lens?

Short zooms excluded. Have you just taken one lens and worked to make your shots work? I have. I used an ME Super with a 50mm f/1.4 for a full roll of film.

The point I'm trying to get to is I, as others, have several choices of fixed glass that could have been used to suite a particular scene but didn't take them out so no option but to use the lens you chose at home.

Bit like my first SLR, K100 with 50mm f/2. Couldn't afford another lens for 6 months so everything was through that lens.

Does any of this make any sense or am I ranting to raised eye brows?

I've not done that for a few years, in fact I have to confess I dont have any primes anymore, unless you count my 90mm Tamron macro everything else is a zoom.

You should have set this one up with a Poll Gary, I think the results would have been interesting.

The MX with a SMC-A 50mm F1.4. But I think only once.

I haven't done this as a deliberate exercise for a very long time. However, I do find myself going out and about with only my Sigma 105 quite often, it's a lens that has surprised me with its versatility.

My 18-250 is always on 1 of my K20's the sigma 10-20 is on the other one and I only use this one to change lenses.

Have done that this summer vacation, we had a house near the woods so simply took one lens for a walk and the next day took another one.
I also often only take the DFA 100mm macro on hikes but now that's replaced by the DA*50-135 most of the time.

I used to do this a lot. When I was an undergrad I would regularly go wandering around the campus with a camera and often took just one 50mm lens with me (later when I got a DSLR my Flektogon 35mm became the lens of choice).

Haven't done it for a while, but I might try it again soon.

I feel guilty, the only camera I take at the moment with a single lens is my Olympus XA2.

I've done it with my film bodies using standard 50s but not the DSLR, must give it a try sometime.

Tamron 90mm f2.8 DI macro.
Light, and works as the old 135mm used to, with the advantage of the macro facility.

I'm going through a manual prime phase at moment, so I will only take the one lens with me. But then again I've never been one for humping tons of stuff around for the sake of it, just like my fishing I will only take what is absoluteIy necessary. I think it's maybe too easy just to reach into your bag and grab another lens instead of working the lens you've got and trying that little bit harder.

I regularly (like gartmore above) go out with just the DA 40mm on my camera. I love the fact that it is as flat as pancake as it normally enables me to squeeze the camera into a titchy backpack which is normally filled with all sorts of other stuff! I have a couple of other primes and I try sometimes to consciously head out with just the one of them, although it's hard sometimes I sometimes think it would be easier if I had less kit to choose from, but I think I'm developing into a bit of a lens-aholic (! if that is a word...)

The only other camera appendage I generally take with me is a circular polariser...

I have not done that for more than35 years with my Zenit E!
I tried to go minimalist when i first bought my IstDL (Though not with a primea). When i used Film i would go Everywhere with my Billingham 550 full so i thought, New technology- New attitude, It did`nt last long and i now have a new 550 brim full!

yep try to do that at least once a month, one camera and one lens....
there is no other way to get proficient with each individual peice of equipment.
I'd go so far as to say you'll lose many important shots if you are swapping lenses and not well versed in each lenses strengths and weaknesses...
