I almost bought my K3 from B&H, they had the body plus (free) 50mm f1.8 + sd card + BG5 battery grip for under £1000 once all taxes and delivery had been paid. I waited a day too long to hit the button and the grip disappeared from the deal.

The lens and card alone weren't worth that price when you took into account the lack of warranty... SRS offering a decent trade in with 3 yr warranty was a much better deal for me.

I was in New York at the end of last year and considered buying a lens from B&H but by the time you added state tax and a taxi fare it was dearer than SRS

The annoying thing about US State and local taxes is that you can't claim them back, afaik, when you leave the country. US citizens can claim VAT back on purchases made in Europe, so it seems very unfair to me.

Someone did say to me if you can prove you don't live in the state you can get the item tax free, but it has never worked for me.

There is no easy way to get taxes back or to avoid them in the US.

Mail Order to your hotel from an "Out of State" supplier works - but you need to give it time and ensure your hotel will accept the delivery.

The other way is only available to diplomats and a few other classification of visitors - until 2011 I had a card issued by the US Department of Justice and that allowed me to get tax free purchases on most items.


I have written/contact several US State Governors asking why there is no reciprocal arrangement - and have never even received the courtesy of a reply from their staff.

It is also worth noting that Tax was reclaimable when leaving Canada - but that was rescinded a few years back.
