Now I've done many black and white conversions of this image but I just can't seem to to make it work or more to the fact I'm unhappy with the conversion

I've been trying to convince myself it's just not working or I'm tired but no matter how long I look at it or how many time i come back to this image it always seems to be uninspiring.

Do you feel the same way.

how can I improve the image as I'm at a loss

the two girls are doing the splits and are very excited.

Hope their is a kind soul out there, and can point me in the right direction.

I don't do portraits but I'm never short of an opinion!

You've lost the top of the further girl's head and I think that's part of it. I tried a square crop losing the back of the closer girl's head to match the loss of the other girl's top of head. Then crop from left to lose very tip of the swirl of hair.

But that wasn't really your question was it? You're bothered about the B&W conversion. Can you post the colour version?

I'm not sure how you converted but in PS I like the slightly blue effect I get with tint 242 and 3.

Lovely smiles..but..for me the eyes are not sparkling. I know it is possible, but I don't know how, to put a highlight in their eyes.

Maybe, as has been mentioned, that the b&w trnsformation has lost some of the sparkle of this shot.

You could think of better ways to frame this, yet, for me, the eyes are the windows of a portrait. If they do not communicate with a sparkle, especially children, then the pic looks dull.

Just my take of the pic.

same here

Well, actually I do an awful lot of lighting faces, but not for still photography...

Anyway, I'd say the basic problem is the lighting on the two girls' faces - the one at the back is burnt-out on one side and the one at the front is under lit. You probably get away with this in colour, but when you go to B&W its very apparent. Obviously a re-shoot is impossible, but you may be able to spend some time with lightening/darkening brushes to even it out - I have no real experience at this though I'm afraid.
Still shooting in the dark (literally and metaphorically)...

After a very quick play in PS Flossie seems to be right. A little burn here and dodge there has made a big difference.

Well that's something learned already today!

well I have looked at the file and the top of the head is as the shoot was taken now I've done some more conversions in Photoshop and come up with this one

Am I getting closer or just losing the plot

I could and a little more catch light

I know the lighting could be better but this was just a quick grab as they where so so so excited and where getting worse by the minuet

Have you tried Flossie's suggestion about making one face darker and the other lighter, it really make a huge difference. I still feel if you crop tighter then you might get away with the loss of the top of her head. Could you create the top via cloning?

This won't help your dilemma, but that picture which looked so lovely and sharp at the small size looks a bit out of focus at the larger size!! Looking at the top of her hair the focus seems to be on the back of the front girl's head? How large is this going to be printed?

I prefer your first BW conversion, btw. The 2nd appears to have a minor halo around the front girl's head.

I'm going with number one the first image and yes Tim the girl is out of focus but this is deliberate.

just trying a bit of creativity the focus is meant to be on the front girl I also have a Image the other way round and one with a bigger DOF this shot was never meant to be seen my the customer let alone be printed.

but it's the expression on the front girls face the client (mother love's)

just a slight crop and some dodging and burning.

Nicely done Ken. My own crop was a bit more severe but yours is better. Now that's two things I have learnt today!
