A friend of mine spotted this shot of mine on flickr:

He suggested I try a 'creative contrast technique' and emailed me a link to a simple tutorial: link

I was aware of the highlight and shadow control in PS but hadn't really looked into it properly, doing most of my adjusting in Lightroom. I think the technique provides a lot more control over the contrast of highlights and shadow areas than just the sliders in Lightroom.

If the manipulation is restricted to using just the sliders, that might be right. However, when they're used in combination with the other tools available in LR3 (the ND filter & brush specifically), a lot more can be achieved.

Hmm on this (Mac) screen both images seem a lot lighter

It's the difference between the default gamma settings on Mac and Windows.

(Whoosh!)

I'll just turn up the 'brightness' knob on my monitor at home!

Actually I find that the default (full brightness) on an iMac and MBP is really too bright for photographic work. I have my MBP15 on 50% brightness and profiled & calibrated to that.

I'm just going through the test pages here: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

BTW, Sean Duggan is excellent! He did a collaboration with Katrin Eismann - http://www.creativedigitaldarkroom.com/
Highly recommended (and that creative contrast is in the book

It's only 2.2 by default if you have Snow Leopard installed. If PP is running 10.5 (which is very possible, as IIRC he only uses Macs at work), then his default gamma is 1.8.

Edit: you made me doubt myself so I had to go look it up: link

Thanks for the link Tim I couldn't find when the changeover was myself! (Hence the rather vague "for quite some time" :lol
