Commercial shoot in Doha

I've just completed a commercial shoot for a large construction company in Doha. The K5 has once again proved what an amazing camera it is, dealing with a huge amount of dynamic range. All the shots were taken with the Sigma 8-16mm or Sigma 24-16mm f2.8. There is very little room around the site to work in, with a dual carriageway in front and building sites in the back. Most of the exterior shots were taken from a mobile access platform. I'm doing the whole shoot again when the landscaping around the buildings is completed, along with some shots from a helicopter (or perhaps a drone, I'm looking at buying one).

The contract stipulates I can only use the pictures myself to publicise my services (part of the contract was that they retain copyright), so I can't post them here, but here's a link to some of the shots on my website if anyone is interested.

Compositionally and technically excellent! Love the tones and white balance control also.

For any output where you need extra resolution or dynamic range, or you need to print bigger than the total image data from an APS-C sensor would allow at your required resolution. Plenty of people then I guess. But no, you don't need FF to be able to take excellent images for web display.

Along with your thread about drones and tethering, I find this really interesting. I hope you keep us up to date.

You don't need FF to print large images: I am regularly getting 30 inch prints (with interpolation) from both the K5 and my Sony Nex.

These images are intended for promotional printed material as well as web use, up to A2 size.

I couldn't agree more about the dynamic range of the K5, Jon. I recently returned from the Mediterranean with hundreds of shots, none much good artistically, but only two or three had to be discarded with blown highlights. The few I shot in RAW were even more impressive in this respect.

I hope that the K3 or whatever the next DSLR is called, will be at least as forgiving in contrasty light. More pixels we do not need (although I expect we'll get them!)

The K-5iiS isn't suitable for large prints of buildings due
to the jaggies (moire) it produces. The K-5 is fine.

I don't think that's right Algi, and moire and jaggies are different things by the way. You would need much finer detail than those images to make moire a problem. It's actually quite difficult to get moire with either the K-5 IIs or the Ricoh GR, unless we go out of our way to generate it.

Basically they are both the same. At least one grid is required
which is always there with the sensor. Several lines or a single
line will produce jagged lines. Dots can also produce moire as
can mathematically produced shapes...

Lots of K-5iiS photos posted even on this site have shown unacceptable
aliasing. I wouldn't risk using the K-5iiS for important shots of
buildings. It can actually change features. The K-5 can also produce
moire but not as bad.

If you look at them full size (100% or 1:1 whatever) Looking at
the top of the photos about 1/3rd in from the left there is
some blue cladding.. then white cladding running vertically right
down to the trees. Next there is some sort of architectural
feature which has been destroyed and turned into MOIRE on the
K5iiS shot. This can't be recovered and wouldn't be acceptable
to the architect.

Also considering big prints might be required if you zoom to
400% the window cills on the K5iiS are very jagged

Just for the hell of it I produced the best sharpened shot I
could at 1280 pixels wide with slight tweaking of the colours
and they were identical. So between the K-5 and K-5iiS I would
chose the K-5 for architectural work.

The K5iiS might be better for focusing in low light
but it doesn't offer anything else over the K5.
