You say guidelines are there. Where do they say PU doesn't get involved.

Being re-active instead of pro-active again as per my OP. This is why threads get "spoiled". Others can only react, while Admin refuses to lead.

I have bought and sold here on a number of occasions, and never had a problem.

Suspicions are often groundless. In one case, a somewhat colourful member of the forum, with whom I had had a number of run-ins, advertised a flash on Ebay, which I placed a winning bid on.

When we both realised who the other party was I had a nervous couple of days, but the flash arrived in good order, and we got on rather better thenceforward.

I think it's fairly clear from the name of the section that the site has no involvement in any transactions resulting from an advertisement in it, and I don't really feel any changes are necessary.

BTW, those who frequently criticise the administration of this site are free to find another. No law forces Pentax owners to use Pentax User.

I don't recall hearing of anyone being 'stung' in a transaction so I'm not sure what these occasional demands for bans on newbies advertising are motivated by.

Like others I have benefited from executry sales here.

Just a question of bereavement sales. If I suddenly snuff it could liz log on as me (we have no secrets)and list my gear for sale or does she have to become a member herself because then she would be a newby seller or would it be best to advertise my demise in general chat, (I think the pointless thread perhaps ) and ask for advice with pricing etc.

I have often wondered how many members die, to be never heard of again and we have no idea.

Gives a new meaning to the saying moving to the dark side .....

As long as they don't suddenly die while I'm waiting for them to dispatch the item I have just paid for....

I had a near miss last year with £350 of our savings, but after almost 3 weeks of sweating I finally got my item.

Turns out I wasn't the first, or last forum member to struggle with a transaction with this particular member.

I have though, bought and sold through the classifieds successfully a number of times and have found everyone else I have dealt with to be trust worthy.

Unfortunately there are those amongst us that are simply just not honest, shame, but true.

Not sure how we can ever moderate such folk.

By naming such a person in the Forum and spelling out the problem(s) encountered with them?

May I ask why you won't buy if the seller asks for a bank transfer?

Is there something dodgy about this?

If it's an Ebay transaction, and the lens doesn't turn up, you MIGHT be able to get Paypal to refund you. But I have my doubts, given their appalling behaviour in the past.

Nonetheless, if you have a Paypal confirmed address, it is slightly better than nothing.

Some people don't like to give out their bank details, but are happy to make payments by cheque. Bizarre, really, as a cheque contains all your bank details.

Personally I always thought that a bank transfer (on the forum) was the easiest way to do it.

I think I am generally a bit too trusting! Although if there is something of interest to me in the calssifieds section I generally watch the item for a bit and check the seller's recent posts etc.

.....only to find that moderators on other sites are autocratic...

As George says, if you make a payment through PayPal (eBay or private purchase) you have some protection as long as you dont use the gift option, whereas with bank transfer you have absolutely none at all. I am happy to use BT for people that have been around for a while but otherwise I stay well clear.

On another note I do wish we could have a mobile version of this forum.
