Hello,

What suggestions please for non-led, manual ring flash solutions for primarily macro photography. Probably second hand and manual for the realistic price.

I'm looking out for a Sunpak DX-8R at the right price.
Can anybody suggest anything similar/cheaper/better?

Thanks.

I've a Centon MR-20, use it only rarely but does the job.

Vivitar Macroflash 5000 - comes with 49, 52 & 55mm lens adapter rings.

Usually sell for about £25 - £30 on fleabay.

Gave up using my AF-360 FGZ for macro work after obtaining the Vivitars-
recommended.

They're quite good, fairly light, use a couple of AA's and low trigger voltage.

There's several other brands sharing the same design which includes the Starblitz 1000 and the Vivitar 5000.

I can second this.
I've got two of the Starblitz 1000 - as John says, work off two AA's, has a thyristor setting which works well. I mostly use on a DFA100mm macro (49mm filter) with no problems. Have used on a K20 and K5 via PC synch socket.

Another vote for the Centon MR-20. Like Dpm, I don't use mine very often but it does the job, even for portraits with a lens of around 35mm (it's far from a powerhouse and you have stay fairly close). The trigger voltage is fine for modern cameras. They crop up on eBay for next to nothing.

There's a buy it now on ebay presently:

I cannot vouch for the seller personally but flash looks OK, it is boxed and reasonably priced.

There are some others which are dearer but don't appear to be boxed.

If you do buy it ask the seller why he didn't keyword spam Pentax too!

I got a cheap Elicar ring flash off ebay. I tried on the K7 with a couple of different lenses, uses Series 7 adaptor rings for different filter sizes. Must try it out again. link

Charlotte has one for sale in the classifieds. It's a DOI, I have one too and can recommend them highly.
