catch in focus

I have turned on catch in focus on my K5 as per P134. lens is DA 18-135. I focused on a chair with half press of shutter button then moved back 3ft and presed the shutter full down and an out of focus chair was taken at that time. What am I doing wrong.

Was the focus sensor in use still aimed at the chair?

Yes I just moved back 3ft

I think you need to use either a manual focus lens or one with a AF/MF switch (eg DA*) in order to get catch in focus to work

Check all the requirements are met:

1. [25. Catch-in Focus] in the [C Custom Setting 4] menu (p.92)
has to be set to [On],

2. The focus mode to be set to AF.S

3. One of the following types of lenses to be attached, either:
• a Manual focus lens, or a
• DA or FA lens that has a MF and AF setting on the lens - the
setting on the lens must be set to MF before shooting.

4 Set the focus mode lever to AF.S

Don't think the DA 18-135 has a manual focus mode setting on the lens so probably isn't suitable. No doubt someone has a workaround though!

This basically won't work. Catch in focus is best used with manual focus lenses, although, as mentioned, some lenses have an AF/MF switch.

it works a dream with the DA*300 John .. but of course it has an AF/MF switch.

Thanks everyone. It looks as if I want to use this I will have to treat myself to a new lens in the next few years.

Just get a nice cheap M or A prime. Works perfectly with them for very little money.

The K-5 itself has an AF/MF switch too.

It is the K-5 manual that states that for Catch-In focus to work it has to be the lens that has the manual setting or be a manual focus lens. Have you found a workaround?

I have a love/hate relationship with catch in focus...

It's a brilliant feature... Unless you want your in-focus subject away from the centre of the frame...

I use K-x and I reckon this is less of an issue with Pentax dslr's featuring visable focus points in the VF...

Interesting. it won't indeed work with MF selected on the K-5 with an AF lens.

however if you put an MF lens on and select MF on teh K-5 it won't work either. you need to bave a lens that is MF or set to MF and AF selected on the camera.

Seems daft to disable this feature for AF lenses in MF mode on the camera.

It's funny how, after all this time this feature is still causing problems.
Pentax first introduced 'catch in focus' with the SF series as far as I know, so you would expect it to be straight forward by now.

It's not daft at all. Expecting it to work with the camera set to MF is just wrong.

MF, set on the camera, means that it's expecting you to do the focusing, so it allows the shutter to be released irrespective of whether the AF system would think it was in focus.

MF, set on the lens, simply means that you have to turn the focus ring yourself, and has nothing to do with whether the camera's AF system is being used.

Therefore, for CIF to work, you need camera set to AF, and a lens where you turn the focus ring yourself. Whether this is an old MF lens, or an AF lens set to MF if it can be, is irrelevant.
