EDIT. Do I need a cable release? Vic.
Yes, one with a lock button. Some thing like this: ebay
Can't vouch for that one but it is cheap and should do the job!

Or something like this ebay for something more elaborate.

It needs to have a shutter lock function (on the first one it just slides up to keep the button pressed.)

i think you will end up with double exposures, as once the shutter has fired the release button needs to be depressed again for the next subject to appear and trigger again if you lock open you get double exposure. you are not dealing with a film that is triggered to move on as in Vic,s camera. actually does sound more advanced than Pentax

That's a good point but not double exposures. What you describe would happen with the drive mode set to single exposure, it would just take the one exposure. For multiple exposures the drive mode will need to be set to continuous (hi or lo) and at the point something is in focus it will fire off exposures rapidly while something remains in focus. It does work, I've just tried it.

For anyone looking for the best choice of lens for this, a Pentax A compatible lens would seem to be best. It passes the f number through so that automatic exposure works, but needs the manual focussing which is required for CIF to function.

While experimenting with this I've found saving the best settings for CIF to one of the user modes saves a lot of fiddling each time and having to remember all the changes that need to be made (and back again afterwards.) I can now get to my CIF settings and back purely by changing the exposure mode dial.

It seems my memory is fading as I get past my sell by age. I now remember after your prompts that with my old Chinon I did use a locking cable. [The old plunger type] So it meens I will have to buy a modern cable release. The origonal Pentax one at £40.00 plus is a bit much for a little bit of use, so I think I might try one of the cheapos. Also I will fit an "A" lens instead of the Takumar "M"
To everyone who has replied, Thank you for your input and mainly for jogging my memory. THE OLDER I GET THE BETTER I WAS.

Here I am again. Pentax CS-205 cable release SRS £50.00 plus.
I just ordered a genuine NEW Pentax CS-205 from Mifsuds for £18.00 + £3.99 P&P. Total £21.99. I thought at that price [a bit more than the copies] I might as well have the genuine article.
Dispatch from UK 3-4 days.

Looks a good buy and about the price I paid for something similar (I got one that does automatic timing and can preset the number of exposures.)

One additional thought, it might prove necessary to use the eyepiece cover provided with the camera to stop stray light affecting the exposure. Worth an experiment to make sure if exposures without it look a little off perhaps?

Any ideas on how to do this with a K-r? I can't use a manual cable release as it's not compatible and the IR remote won't do it either. Short of a clamp holding the shutter button down I'm stuck at present.
