Can you help moi (re) K-5IIs question

Bit of help required please from any K-5IIs owners

Looking to change my other make full frame camera for something a bit lighter and K-5IIs looks like it could be the answer

Realise landscapes won't cause much of a moire effect, but would like to know how much of a problem it is in real life situations

Particularly enjoy steam railway photography, can't see much of a problem there either, but would really like user opinions

My most recent Pentax purchase was a K10D or perhaps the K200D and realise things have come on rather a lot since then

There are no problems with real world photography and the K-5iis, moire is almost a 'non-issue'. Do not worry about this being a problem for you, it won't be. I've had my K-5iis for a year now and never seen any moire, I also have a K-3 with the anti-moire simulation filter turned off and it has not been a problem with this camera either.

Massive change since the 10MP bodies you mention. Much more mature product now. I've yet to experience issues with moire and wouldn't expect them in the circumstances you mentioned. Have tried to provoke with fabrics, to no avail so far. But I have seen occasional examples posted online e.g. with Venetian window blinds. The image quality I'm getting from the K-5iiS is easily the best I've experienced from any crop frame camera and other than depth of field, I suspect would give some full frame models a run for their money.

When I owned a K5lls I never had any issues moire, but when I shot a wedding I would keep checking the LCD and zooming in, but never found any.

Like David states, I doubt that you will ever see any, but with the K3 providing a solution to any possible moire it did stop me thinking about it like I used to do with the K 5lls.

Landscapes and trains no problem, fabrics and some architecture possible moire issues, but I never had any.

Moire can rarely be seen, in normal use it won't ever be a problem.

I have a K3, and I often see moire when doing pictures inside buildings (curtains are bad for that when backlighted) and occasionally on clothing. If you don't get involve with those situations, it shouldn't be a problem.

This thread is of particular interest to me because a couple of weeks ago I spent a few hours with the K-3 trying to achieve moire so that I could see how effective the two stages of anti-aliasing filter simulation are and what effect they have on image sharpness/detail. I tried lots of fabrics of the type that tend to cause moire, indoors and out and from various angles, then went out looking for building features, drainage grids, etc that used to sometimes cause moire in the 10Mp generation of DSLRs. The best I was able to achieve was moire effects in in-camera jpegs seen on screen as thumbnails. As soon as those jpegs were enlarged the moire vanished. I suppose I should feel really pleased about this but can't help envying pentaxian450. I just want to see how effective the anti-aliasing filter simulator is but it seems mainly redundant.

Interestingly, a TV news article a few days ago showed Rebecca Brooks being interviewed outside the law courts. She was wearing a fine striped coat and while she kept still there was no moire but as soon as she moved away her coat was alive with coloured moire. So maybe more of a video issue? Unfortunately the K-3's anti-aliasing filter simulator does not work in movie mode.

I've had mine for over a year and the only example I have seen where it was obvious in the shot was in this thread...
You sometimes see what looks like moire but when you magnify the picture it disappears, on this shot it remained at all magnification levels.

I think that's an point of note about the simulated filter feature, in that you have to turn it on at the point of capture.
Thus the best you can hope for is to recognise situations where it may be an issue, and presumably take some photos with and without it turned on.

Absolutely right. It's one of the reasons I was trying to provoke moire in K-3 images - so that I could bear those circumstances in mind and check the monitor carefully when encountering such conditions, then employing the anti-aliasing filter simulator if required.

Incidentally, I also owned a K-5 IIs for about eight months before buying the K-3 and saw slight moire in only a very small number of images out of a few thousand taken.

Its so new its not made it into the guidebooks yet - I can just imagine a new chapter in the 'Digital Photography for Photographers' book and its like ..... 'Chapter 8 - Anti-Aliasing Capture Filtering & Other In-Camera Image Defect-Management operations' ... hmmm, that sounds good, I think I'd like to write the guide to all that stuff myself

Anyway ... what would the advice be? Check the LCD screen after shooting with the filter off? Learn what to look at most closely for signs of Moire? There's lots of potential there ... lets hope they also recommend readers go and buy a Pentax K3

I wouldn't worry abut it. You can get rid of it in Lightroom anyway.

I must say that when I had moire, I was almost always able to get rid of it with the "fake" anti-aliasing filter (except one time, where some residual moire was left).

Since I've had the K3, I've learned what type of situation might cause moire, so I turn on the anti aliasing filter before the shoot.
