Most reports I've followed, both from users and reviews, suggest that the AF improvements in the K5II versions are well worth the extra outlay over the MK1. I believe this is both for faster AF response & improved low-light auto-focusing. For you, at this particular upgrade junction, I'd have thought the K5II was clearly the way to go. This assumes you do plenty of AF work and have the lenses. (eg for me, with only one AF zoom and using mostly manual lenses this particular question wouldn't necessarily be significant).

I found a worthwhile improvement with the AF on the II when using it for moving subjects (motor sport, birds in flight etc.). It would be my first choice. But if your subjects are mostly static, then the 5 is just fine.

I would say 'yes' it's a significant improvement. My K-5 Mk1 was inconsistent in AF even on static subjects. The MkII is far more accurate and also has the added benefit of being able to lock focus in near darkness.

David, does the K511 low-light AF still use the green AF assist lamp, like I have on the K7? I have found this useful, and it can lock on in darkness, but it does take its time, and can still hunt a bit.

Hi Nigel, you can have the AF Assist lamp switched on if necessary but it doesn't need it, so no, generally not. I noticed at my 25th Wedding Anniversary celebrations where it was quite dark, that Shaun Wilson's Nikon D7100 was struggling to focus and the AF Assist light was constantly illuminating, which was annoying to say the least. My K-5iis was locking on straight away and the light never came on once.David, does the K511 low-light AF still use the green AF assist lamp, like I have on the K7? The K5 II it is. I am hoping to take some gig photos and that low light AF performance is the deal breaker.

This is not true at all and David knows it! as i never used the Nikon D7100 at his 25th at the night party at all just the K5 the K52s the nikon was in the car and he knows i do think that if people are going to say things about other people they should at least tell the truth not just try to miss led some one out of the money

Its to late for that David has told some little lies here as we fell out four weeks ago which iam not going into, but to make a comment that's not true needs to be addressed don't you think? I did not use the Nikon at the night time as i was not used to using that camera so for David to make a comment like that i think is very wrong ? Peace and goodwill boys. I am looking to upgrade my Kr. I have budgeted for a K5II (the 's' is out of budget).
Would I see a marked AF improvement in the mark II over the original 5? Or would I be better off going for the Mark one second hand and investing in new glass ( I mainly use a Tamron 17-50).
