You are right KG. Once satisfied there is a genuine claim the Insurer would either repair the camera - assume not viable here because of the damage, replace the camera and if the nearest replacement is the K20d they should offer this, or give the cash equivalent.
As for increasing the premium - unlikely but if they do then the increase will be far less than the value of the claim. Say your House contents premium is £300 - even if they increase it by 20% that's only £60 extra - and if you have a combined building and contents insurance they can't increase the premium on the buildings section - only the contents.
By the way Nigel - I assume you do have cover for personal possessions outside the house?
Hope that helps.
John

Thans John,
My home contents insurance seems to cover me for £1500.
I will try them instead.
How do I persuade them the K20 is a valid replacement and not the K2000/K-m. Wasn't the K100D the entry level model?
the only little worry is the line in my policy that states... "we have a nationwide netwrok of suppliers" - I hope I am not forced to use one of these as the likelihood of them offering Pentax is low.

You may need to be positive and determined with the insurer. Clearly the relacement for a system camera will be the same system - no point giving you a Nikon to use with Pentax lenses!
The only discussion may be which model and as there is no direct relacement available currently then they should just pay you so you can put it towards a more expensive model.
The relacement for the K100D would be the K200D - the Km is a different beast altogether. There may still be K200D bodies advertised in AP from sone suppliers.

Before you get too excited...
Not all insurance is New for Old, so they may only pay out the market value of a replacement of the same age which may only be a couple of hundred.
Secondly, there are usually clauses which state they have the right to pay in cash where there is no reasonable alternative.
Thirdly, if you have no other Pentax-only gear they could say a Sony Alpha is an acceptable substitute!
Put your claim in and argue your point. Stand your ground and get the best deal you can!

Thanks for all your help.
I went to Jessops (not expecting much) to be told that I have to send the camera off to be assessed and it will cost me £25 and take upto three weeks!
I explaiend to the assistant that it had water damage and what was his opinion. He said he was 99% sure it was unrepairable. I asked would he put that down in writing, expecting him to refuse, but he did and even valued the camera at between £550 - £600. I never expected soemone from Jessops to be so helpful!
I put through the claim with my home insurance company by phone (excellent service too) and today they have agreed to pay me £549 (£599 less £50 excess)
I can now go about purchasing my replacement camera.

Yes that is good news. The Insurance Industry often gets bad publicity for those claims which go wrong (whether it is the claimant's fault or the Insurer's fault can be debatable) but never gets good publicity for the vast majority of claims which are settled satisfactorily!
Enough - rant over - I too would be interested which camera Nigel purchases.

I am very pleased with the whole process.
Jessops - very gelpful salesperson - I think I actually got someone who knew something about cameras!
Home insurance - just had to ring up and make a claim over the phone - got told within 24 hours the result of my claim
And I am now sitting at home with a brand new....
... K20
(sorry couldn't justify the difference in price!)
Amazed at how more advanced it is than the K100D
So far...
Love the ease at changing apeture / shutter and ISO
Love the better control of WB

I am a bit wary of using my household insurance as the last time I made a claim they put my premiums up and I expect I ended up paying for the value of the claim over the next few years!!
Seriously,
I expect they will only value the K100D at £300 anyway.
I am now thinking that if I get £300 from then and then put £300 of my own money towards a K20 then I have upgraded to a K20 for only £300
I claimed for a cooked computer several years ago and had no increase in policy charge.
As for only £300, check your policy, has it a new for old clause?
If so the replacement for the K100d is currently the K20d. The K-m is an entry level model, the K100d isn't(wasn't).
K110+DA40, K200+DA35, K3 and a bag of lenses, bodies and other bits.
Mustn't forget the Zenits, or folders, or...
PPG entries.
