OK, Brian ...
Just what do you mean by "wont focus properly"?
Front or back focus?
No autofocus?
Won't work outdoors in daylight?
Your description is not really helpful when it comes to identifying the fault - if there really is a fault. You don't even say, in this post, which camera.
A camera "freeze" indoors could be because there was not enough light - and that could affect the autofocus.
If you are anywhere near me, you could try one of my lenses on your body, and then try your lens on my body.

There is probably a simple explanation as Jeff suggests, to elaborate a bit more, Using the camera indoors in Av mode the camera would possibly have set a shutter speed which did run into a number of seconds, it sounds like the "freeze" as you put it was nothing more than the mirror flipping up and the shutter opening, then after the allotted time the shutter closes and the mirror flips down again, as for focusing the camera may struggle to lock on and focus in very dull conditions or where there is a lack of contrast.
Take the camera outside today and give it a try, hopefully you will find is performs OK.

hi all thanks for the feedback the lens will not focus on the end ring properly and i have tried it again today in better light but its still the same it tries to focus on auto but it cant get sharp ,it wont even focus manualy properly so i think its broken i have just phoned pentax but had to leave a message for them to get back to me so we will have to wait and see .brian ps my tamron lens is fine but it is a manual focus lens so i think one of the motors could have broken.
