All of the above, and yet....
something about the composition, maybe that the bridge is too far into the corner? It doesn't work for me I'm afraid.

I like the composition of the second one, but the tones and textures of the first. It is a shame about the chin rest in the second one though.

Agreed with the tones and texture of the first but I have a mild panic that the body is slightly damaged up by the fingerboard - hope this is not so .

Colours from the 1st one, space around the bridge from the 2nd one
The chin rest is indeed a bit of a bummer where it is. Perhaps a much tighter crop to try and exclude it in the 2nd one (while keeping some space around the bridge).
The strings look a little 'jagged' as well. Slightly oversharpened? They also look extremely white - are they supposed to be white?

Technically the strings are probably 'wire' on gut rather than 'plain' wire , so are a light silver in colour.
The one with an Adjuster [ either E or A depending on whether it's a Viola or Violin ] is wire and should be a lot thinner .

Thanks all - they are gut strings - 'Olive' in fact. And they are silver coloured (or at least the GDA strings are). The gold string is 'E', TT (it is a violin, not a viola). The chin rest was a challenge, but I was not happy with cropping it out, and was not game to take it off either.

I think you need to decide what is the focus of the shot here. For me the bridge is too much to the edge. I wondered about strings from right centre exiting top left.
