Had a nice morning out with John and Howard today over at Frodsham for today's steam special, The train is the CATHEDRALS EXPLORER headed by two Stanier black five engines 44871 and 45407. I have converted all three images to mono because the colours looked a bit flat tbh due to dull weather, that's my excuse anyway

44871 certainly gets around Cliff. It came trundling through Durham on Monday morning, just light engine and support coach. I believe it was heading for Scotland to run a steam special there. It was unexpected, I was in Durham to do some general photography, but I managed to grab a couple of quick shots, not good enough to post here.
Your pictures today are more successful though the one of the train crossing the Manchester Ship Canal seems a bit dense, is there more detail to be had in the dark areas?
From a purely photographic point of view and not of railway interest your narrow boat image is the best of this set. It has some lovely quality detail.

A good set a very industrial feel to them, as said, I also like the narrowboat shot.

I like the first Cliff, nice silhouette shot, as Stephen says a very industrial feel. The narrowboat's a classic, lovely composition. I was a little way up the track on a public footpath, chatting with a local when she came through, almost missed it altogether But managed a couple of shots as she passed. This is the best I could manage in the very dull conditions + 0.7 EV.

The first pic of the narrow boat was a little on the large side (don't know what happened there:shock this smaller version is easier to view.

David I have a couple more images of them crossing the ship canal so I`ll see what I can come up with. I think 44871 has been standing in for a couple of locos that are having problems at the minuet Britannia being one of them

Thanks for all the comment comments and HowardJ where are you:

Hi, Cliff.

I like version 2. The tones look right on the bridge & train and for that I think you are allowed to loose a little of the sky highlights.

Best of all I like the composition as you have given the engines the space to move into.

I like the mono conversion and the sharp detail on "fly" too.

Nice captures too, John but skies like that, I know are the bane of steam photographers lives.

Peter

I'm here!!! Good morning.

Follow those as they say. An extremely difficult job. With such great images. So that's what you were doing kneeling down by the narrow boat, Cliff

So some of mine -

1. Approaching fast

2. My version of the bridge shot

3. A close-up crop of The Lancashire Fusilier (with steam)

Hi Howard, I really like the first one with the inclusion of the signal box and signal. I find the tree in the second a liitle distracting TBH. Great detail and colour in the third.

Nice tones in version #2 Cliff and I like the alternative narrowboat shot, I stll like the silhouette shot originally posted, maybe in colour at sunrise/sunset later in the year

I love the 3-D effect in FLY, gives it real punch.

Not so sure about the out-of-focus rendering in 'narrow boat #2', but probably still better than everything being sharp!
