My Lowepro slingshot works very well for me & we do a lot of long distance walking. I've even taken it up mountains. It easy to carry & still leaves your hands free. It is also quite easy to get to the contents. I have a K10D & 2 zooms, flash, filters plus other bits & it all fits in well. I also carry a pocket camera in there too. I can't recall which model no. the bag is but it's the smaller of the lot. The K10 just fits with a lens on, but snug is good as nothing shifts about. Hope that helps.

The Slingshot 100's a good bag, but can be uncomfortable at the end of a days walking. I know I have one and rate it highly.
I recently purchased a Lowepro Fastpack 200 for flight use, it's big enough to take everything you need and the camera kit for a city break. Not waterproof though!
That's my choice, the Fastpack came from Amazon at a good price and the slingshot from Jessops on special offer!
Shop around before buying is my advice, and see what others recommend

Definitely work well for me. I trekked around a few shops & tried some out before settling on this one. It has to feel right.

I picked up the FastPack 200 for £29.99 on Amazon any colour you like as long it is black. Excellent bag, my K20 with 55-30 attached fits like a dream with bags of space for other bits and pieces.
When I was in the photographic retail trade I spent hours looking for a suitable bag and changed it every year !.

I use a Lowepro back pack and very good it is, especially if the gear is heavy.
The only problem I find is getting a soaking wet back from sweat when walking or cycling far.
When walking you can carry it by the handle for a bit while your back dries off but it's best to be careful about putting it on the back rack of a bicycle for the same purpose. The road vibration can quickly loosen the tiny screws that hold the equipment together - especially vulnerable are the lens bayonet mounts.

It just occurred to me that the shape (sex) of the photographer probably has an influence on the type of kit bag. The slingshot isn't a shoulder bag if used properly. I find that the strap sits comfortably across my front as it sits diagonally where as a backpack has straps that squash things, if you know what I mean. I like the slingshot because you carry your stuff to the back of you but can sling it around to the front for easy opening when needed. Carrying that much weight in a shoulder bag would bang against my hips & be uncomfortable. Why not pop into a shop & ask to try a few out to see which you prefer?

You're right of coarse.
But seriously the shape of the person must make a difference in any case. What if a person is large or small? The sling shot wouldn't suit a very large person as the straps aren't too long. But on the other hand doesn't a shoulder bag place the weight all on one side?
I guess one consideration is if your not willing to take the camera out in the rain & get it wet then why buy a water proof camera bag. Any water proof bag would do. When I use my sling shot I've often got the camera around my neck too, unless we are climbing.

I want ONE bag which is NOT TOO BIG that will carry ONE BODY with zoom attached and maybe one spare lens and battery, memory cards, chargers, cables etc PLUS ONE laptop (13.3" Sony Vaio) PLUS room for books and bits and pieces AND is suitable for carry-on on a plane.
Everything I have seen is either too big or too small. All the backpacks I have seen are great if you want to carry three bodies, ten lenses, flash, tripod...you know what I mean, yet the backpack design is the type they tend to use for laptop/photo hybrids and the photos of them look great filled to the brim with bodies and lenses, but I don't want to carry everything - just one body and maybe two lenses max plus my laptop and chargers plus some books and clothes etc. Any suggestions for a flexible solution which still has proper camera and laptop compartments and is suitable for onboard carry on on flights?

Well bodyheat, I tend to pack my camera bag in my suitcase along with my tripod then carry my camera kit in my hand luggage. I use a normal small hand luggage case & wrap lenses etc. in cardigans or any other small clothing items. Once through passport control etc. you can always take the camera out again. I always think that carrying a bag that looks like it has over £1K of photo stuff & a lap top in it is just asking for trouble. I wouldn't bother with a special bag but that's just my opinion.

It looks to me as though some of the Crumpler bags might be hybrids. Does anyone have one they recommend?

Lowepro Off Trail (2) series are unbeatable. Mine takes my K10 with Sigma 70-200 and 1.4TC fitted AND grip. Lens hood reversed. Outer pockets carry the 16-50 and the 10-17. Any bags that are not AW can be treated with Fabsil and left to "dry" for a week and will be waterproof.
Also use a Toploader from Lowepro.

85-55mm and 50-200mm kit lens. What is the best type of bag to get. Would like to carry spare battery's, cards. We do a lot of walking so waterproof is a must. There are so many about that I would like some recommendations.
