Back-up to a K5 : Pentax or Nex ?

I'm new to DSLR, but on balance, surely a sturdy decent specced body with the same mount is the way forward? Would have said a K7, but you've just flogged one K10 or K20 for budget?
NEX does look an interesting bit of kit though. Just to throw another possibility into the mix, have you considered a waterproof c*mpact? Obviously quality and control won't be in the same league, but depending on which bits of Antipodes you're going to, if there's the opportunity to do so, there could be water based stuff going on that's beyond the capabilities of the weather sealing of a K5

Yes you did, Leica Today I went hands on with all of the EVILs ; Samsung, Ricoh, Olympus, Panasonic and of course Sony's NEX C3 (did I miss any ?).
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.
Apparently.

I do have a Sanyo HD Camcorder with UW housing for scuba so that area is well covered.
2nd hand K20s are not much cheaper than the K7 I sold so I don't want to go down that route. The K10 or K200D are more in the ballpark as a pure backup.
The NEX series offer something different as well as being able to accept all of my lenses in case of the worst happening - so big pluses there. And may also offer a temporary cure to my newly acquired CBA (to add my existing LBA) - I'm one sick puppy.

That's true .. but MF doesn't bother me for 90% of my shooting (and Pentax's CIF is absolutely superb) ... and it's not out yet so how can I spend my money

NEX does look an interesting bit of kit though. Just to throw another possibility into the mix, have you considered a waterproof compact? My little Sony TX-5 is waterproof down to 10 feet. Even so it took some courage for me to eventually submerge it in water. It uses the same sensor as the forthcoming Pentax Q btwI'm new to DSLR, but on balance, surely a sturdy decent specced body with the same mount is the way forward? And yes image quality isn't in the same league as the other cams being discussed here, but becuase it's tiny, with no sticky out lens plus the waterproofing, it can be used to grab pics that you simply wouldn't get with a DSLR or even bigger compacts without attracting unwanted attention of ingress of water.
