Can anyone recommend a uk processing company for B+W film/prints.

Also what are your experiences having the film scanned onto cd for further digital manipulation yourself.

I have always thought that b&w printing should be done by the photographer.

However, HCB got somebody to do his for him, so who am I to argue?

I've done lots of B/W film processing for a member of ePHOTOzine: he would send me the films with negative sheets and a return post envelope ( and a CHEQUE ) and I charged him £1-50 for processing film and a B/W contact sheet. He used a lot of Kodak T-max 100; I did it in Crawley's FX37 formula. Let me know if you want my service - plenty of time on my hands and loads of chemicals to use up !

I have started using DSCL in Manchester after a couple of bad results with Jessops and high-street shops: http://www.dscolourlabs.co.uk/

I have had about 20 rolls developed there and until now the quality has been great and I usually have my negatives back within two days.

I've always processed my films and printed myself until I befriended a brilliant B+ W printer (Paris Match, French Vogue, GQ etc.), he is better and faster than me and doesn't waste so much paper!

I too enjoy doing my own B&W processing (although admittedly very unskilled, it is great fun)-but then rather than printing (currently no access to an enlarger etc) I scan the negs in using a basic Epson 3490 scanner, and then do the digital manipulation thing before printing out on my computer printer. Seems like a good half-way house between film and digital.

My last batch I sent to Ilford and I was very happy with the results even though it took more than a week to get the negatives back.

Try using Kodachrome 64 these days. Rarely comes back from darkest Switzerland in less than three weeks.

(If you are wondering why I use K64 instead of Velvia it is because of the known long archive life, the slides are usually excavation record shots!)

Cheers, Kris.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.
