I have been trying to use a Pentax remote control with a K20D and various lenses, but it does not focus before the picture is taken.

I presume this is correct, but is there any way around it?

You can set in the menus for it to AF with the remote control. Can't remember off hand where exactly - somewhere in the User list I think.

Not unless you read the manual

It's a custom function - see page 126 the note and page 74:
Set "[AF in remote control]" to "[On]" (point 16 on page 74)

That is the default but you can change it so you can focus with the remote.

Page 126 of hand book see memo.

In the C menu set AF in remote control to on.

Only kow 'cause I looked it up myself last night.

Have tried setting it to ON - the custom list indicates this with a "2".

But it still does not work!

...haven't got my Pentax CS105 with me at the moment to check...
Are you using a genuine Pentax cable remote CS105, or some other remote?
Does custom option 14 (AF on halfpress) have any bearing?

Using the wireless remote.

It seems as though it works on AF.S but not AF.C

I'll try some more later.

Thanks for the pointers from you all.

That is correct. If you choose AF.C then it will trigger straightaway as you press the remote button. If you want it to focus first then you must select AF.S.

Remember to use the viewfinder blind to prevent stray light entering and affecting the exposure.

Would you mind explaining how stray light can reach the sensor in this manner?...sorry, this might be a stupid question. Presumably, there would be a reduced risk when looking thru the viewfinder?

It does not hit the sensor, but the light meter and will result in under exposure. Your eye/face is normally adequate to stop stray light entering.

Try it out - take two successive pictures, one with the viewfinder open and another with it closed. It will be worse when you have bright sunlight shining into it.

I just shade the viewfinder with my hand. I find sliding that little thingy on and off too much of a pain. Never a problem with the LX of course...

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Sure you are right, Polchraine....but isn't that a design fault then?....and a bit basic....this isn't another one of your April fool jokes, is it?
