As well as the long term effect of grinding away parts of the engines it also can have an immediate effect. It can extinguish the fuel burning in the engine.
This happened years ago when a 747 flew through a cloud of volcanic ash. All four engines shut down at well over 30000ft and when they managed to get them going again they were below 5000ft
The solid stuff (mainly glass I think) in the cloud also knackered the engines to the extent that they all had to be scrapped.

Exactly ... and when you consider the position of controls and especially the gear stick, the driver sitting on the right is the better position to control the car for a vast majority. Most people are right handed and have better control with the right had so that should stay on the steering wheel. When changing gear, a driver on the right uses his less co-ordinated left hand whereas a driver on the left uses his left and has less control over the car direction.

BUT in my defence the Lowepro EX 160 only takes the K-x and the spare lens , the flash is just too much for it
the Microtrekker 100 takes everything with a squeeze but when I eventually get that 40mm ltd , there won't be room for it
And since I'm off taking both the 18-55 and the 50 - 200 AND the flash - well Calumet made a sale today. Being quite honest I tried 2 bags and both the salesman [ Donald ] and I looked at the smaller one and laughed - he then went and got the CV998 link
And I put things in there and we had some space left [ quite a bit really ] so that bag came home with me .
Bag is now packed and incredibly the 2 external front pockets are empty I've tried it on - and with everything in it it doesn't seem heavy

On the LHD/RHD argument - Suriname, a former Dutch colony, in South America, drives on the left, so definitely not only islanders or former British colonies. It along with Belize are the only countries in the mainland Americas still driving on the left
Sweden drove on the left until 1967, Iceland until 1968.
Canada drove on the left until 1923, and Newfoundland only switched sides in 1947, just before it joined Canada in 1949.
Argentina only switched because of the Pan-American highway.

And Samoa has seen sense and last year moved to the right (correct) side of the road. They now drive on the left too.

Actually Guyana drives on the left too and I think Belize drives on the wrong side - although friends who have been there say that the locals "drive on the smoothest side!"
