iPhone/iTouch Apps

For those with iPhones/iPodTouches etc

In my cruising around browsing on things like the iTunes App store
[ no not necessarily for music ] I found some Photography Apps for camera folk - sort of generic stuff . Quite a few actually, but being your stereotypical Scot I go for the free ones first

Now, I see from some websites and the iTunes store, that certain camera manufacturers are now developing apps for the iPhone/iPodTouch .

To my surprise/horror Nikon has put on 2 FREE apps !! and Leaf Cameras has a remote for its LC11 software and a couple of others seem to be in the process of developing their apps now .

sooooooooooooooooo the question is

WILL Pentax develop an app [ or two or more ] for us Pentax folk ?

If it was something you could could use would you be prepared to pay for it ?

I had a look at the Photography Apps and to be honest there wasn't anything that attracted me, free or otherwise.

The useful things were related to weather (Met Office) and destinations (Maps and National Trust, etc.)

An English Heritage and Scottish Heritage App would be nice, and a CADW one too of course.

But John - there's nothing specifically for Pentax !!

Nikon - is putting on stuff

Rumour hath it that other camera makers are preparing stuff - but is Pentax ??

The Photographer's Ephemeris will soon have an app - it will cost $8.99 though.

Not that I have an iPhone, or want one. My son has one though and has all sorts of apps which he finds useful - all free ones though.

Here's my list:

GoodReader Lite - very good PDF reader with search ability! Really helpful to carry around the camera user manual etc

Keeper - for anything password related.

iDOF Calc - quite a nice little DoF calculator

Exp. Lite - useful if you can't remember exposures by eye

Day Tides - can be useful to know the tide. The free app only shows you the current day's tide information (which will do for me)

Sun Moon - helpful sunrise & sunset calculations. Had a couple of flaky times on iPod Touch when there's no WiFi though.

Planets - has sun/moon compass, 3D planetarium, and sunrise-sunset information as well.

NationalTrust - if you can live by their photography rulings () then this has all the NT places to visit. Pretty handy when out and about.

...and some more besides

Don't think I can think of anything Pentax-related that will be useful enough. If the iPod/iPhone had IRDA then a Pentax remote release would've been handy.

EDIT: Perhaps they need Nikon apps to locate the functions on the camera? Pentax menus and functions are always soooo logical by comparison

I guess this will hinder the development of new apps:

...maybe, maybe not. It seems primarily aimed at Adobe CS5's ability to compile Flash for iPhone
(Although the loose terms of 3.3.1 seem to take in a very large swathe of the current apps )

But pentax is a smaller company, I rather have the staff working on a new camera than an iPhone app

Someone at adobe is mad though link

But seriously though why would Apple do this, it would limited to number of apps and that was one of the selling points

Have you looked at this one ?

Nikon Learn and Explore

It's a free App - and looks absolutely brilliant - it's now sitting on my Touch.

It's choc full of generally useful info and stuff and of course is a nice bit of advertising.

This is the sort of thing Pentax should be doing .

It's no good bringing out good cameras [ which they do ] unless folk get to hear of them.

Get an App like this on the App Store and folk will look at it - firstly out of curiosity , and then they may well become interested and want to know what Pentax are about.

And what has an Apple app have to do with Pentax, I might be blind since I don't see a connection.

Also people interesting in such an app already have a camera so it would not be a free form of advertising.

ps. didn't thought Apple would allow a competition to Safari on their iPhone http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2010/04/13/

Putting an App up to Apple and getting it accepted gives Pentax a place in the public eye .

It's ADVERTISING - it gets folk interested in Pentax - maybe those who have P&S and are ready to move on [ as I was - and remember I went from Kodak and Fuji - to which make ?? ].

It's a way to keep Pentax before their prospective customers

The best thing Apple missed was to stick a USB interface/SDHC reader on the ipad and bring out a cut down photo manager app. Now that would have been tasty.

Pentax apps? One that gives the real time percentage disappointment at a non-show of a FF DSLR? Or one that counts down to the next lens price rises?
Lurking is shirking.!

Who has ideas for what a Pentax App might be, that would be useful?

And my question is why should people get interesting in Pentax because of an apple app?

From quick look what others are doing it would be a shortcut to the Pentax gallery, tips and tricks and some kind of new-paper thing... only interesting if you already have a Pentax in my eyes.

Just get a HP Slate, cheaper and it even has a SDXC card reader

Would be great if you can tethered shooting to work as well
