AP K-7 Review

I dont read reviews anymore, sorry let me rephrase that, "I dont go out of my way to buy magazines to read a review" why? because they all seem to be just a mish mash of someones imagination, do these people actualy get a camera to hold or is it just a picture of one and a spec sheet
This has been said several times before, by others and myself, the final scores on these "tests" do not reflect the contents or comments of the reviewer, this is especially evident in comparison tests where several lenses are pitted against each other, Pentax lenses often get more positive comments yet lower scores.
I wasn't interested in a K7, my 10&20D's are good enough for what I want, but after handling the K7 I will probably upgrade as soon as the price drops, Pentax should stop sending cameras to mags for review and send someone out onto the streets and letting people HOLD the K7

This may be because AP have been given a hard time about this on their own forum, Damien Demolder as well joined in the threads and I think they have tried to rebalance.
I suspect she would be surprised if anyone thought she was biased.
I agree, and can imagine the review went through many drafts to ensure it appeared unbiased! The reviewer, Angela NIcholson, wrote a very bland piece in a way, and I think she was trying very hard to be fair and unbiased. One of the most critical points in the review, that of the AF performance, I can't help but feel would be helped hugely by the use of a non-screw type lens. On my K20d, the perception of faster focussing over a screw type lens, if not the reality, was apparent.
But, to be fair to her, I guess she was only reviewing the kit that was supplied.
Other than that, it was a good review I thought. I have arranged to have a play with one over the weekend, and hope I can try a few lenses with it.

That has hit the nail on the head, a pre production body and a “kit” lens, I ask you stupid or what? But, to be fair to her, I guess she was only reviewing the kit that was supplied.
To my mind I rather think Pentax knew the other manufacturer (who’s name would cause some to Cross themselves) with a similar system of in camera video and a mike socket for the stereo sound, and rushed it far to quickly trying to beat the competition, in doing so have (cocked it up).
There have been firmware updates and I rather think there will be many more.

If Pentax can't market their cameras properly that's down to them. It's not any magazine's job to do it for them.
Hmm yes there is something lacking in Pentax's marketing. And it's not all down to money - in Digital SLR Photography magazine, they had a two page spread advertising feature (cunningly disguised as a review!) Now that must have been expensive...If Pentax can't market their cameras properly that's down to them. It's not any magazine's job to do it for them.
But the write up missed a lot of key features of the camera, and the accompanying picture was a bit flat, and showed HEINOUS amounts of CA. Cleaning up CA in editing software costs nothing!

User banned after being banned already under another name, two follow up posts deleted, nothing wrong with them per se but the matter has been dealt with and we don't want to prolong it.

Well indeed, but that explains why Nikon get MORE front covers. It doesn't explain why when Pentax has a brand new camera, with a big review in the issue, that a Nikon appears on the front. It could just as well be that there is a link between the prominence of manufacturers products and the amount of advertising purely because the company has products to market?

I wonder if this was a victim of unfortunate timing, and in fact a K7 cover had been planned. But then the test was delayed, the other reviews have already appeared and the K7 is no longer front page news.
On the other hand, the Nikon D300s was a first look ahead of the other magazines, and hence a "scoop" even though it was only the briefest of looks at it.
That's my speculation with the conspiracy theories removed, anyway!

There has been a second attempt to cause dissention by the same person as before. This new identity created for the purpose has now been banned as well.
I suggest you all ignore any further intrusion.
If it happens again then I shall have to refer it for more serious action.

This is misleading as the kit lens is not worth just £20. It is a deliberate pricing strategy by Pentax to make it appear as though if you buy the kit lenses with the body you are getting a much better deal than if you buy the body only. Anyone who seriously thinks the 18-55mm WR is only a £20 lens doesn't understand marketing.stevejcoe wrote:

As others have remarked it is a shame that the D300s takes centre stage in a big way on the front cover and that the K-7 is squeezed into the top 20mm.
I also quite like the ruddy great full page advert for the D300s placed right next to the final conclusion page.[quote:3496ace15f="Greytop"]

I was surprised that Pentax offer the 18-55 zoom, As it does the Camera few favours when in comparison tests with top of the range Cameras. Far better to have a higher spec lens paired with it. After all i`m sure that a kit lens which costs only £20 more than the body only price is not going to impress anyone!
I agree, surely a better match would be the DA 17-70?I was surprised that Pentax offer the 18-55 zoom, As it does the Camera few favours when in comparison tests with top of the range Cameras. However, I personally think this is a flawed strategy as it alienates existing Pentax owners who don't need a new lens and therefore would need to pay a premium just to acquire the body on its own[/quote]I am well aware of the strategy, The point i was attempting to make was that if Pentax were to pair the K7 with a better specified lens that was comparable with its status as a high end DSLR it would have improved its appeal. As the few negative comments were largely down to shortcomings of the lens, I for one would have been happy to pay £100 or more for a kit lens that gave a half decent performance had i been just starting out with Pentax. After all first impressions count for a lot!
Regards - Pete.

Slightly off topic but for what it's worth in the Pentax-Nikon-Canon debate the following might be of interest.
Durham Photographic Society was given a free hand last night(Thursday) to take pictures after hours inside Durham Cathedral.
More than 30 members turned up and while the majority were sporting Canons I gained the distinct impression there were quite a lot more Pentaxes than Nikons on parade.

It does happen from time to time David, But if Pentax keep pricing very high there will be I'm sorry to say fewer as time goes by.

My little review////////it is not as pleasing to look at as the K20,it is very "Square" at the back!.......the screen is too big, what you gain in size is lost in "smudge" from your nose and thumbs!......and last but not least, the lack of camera leaves me very little to hold with my left hand!

I was alwas advised to use the left hand to hold the lens, not the camera.
Not very useful advice if you are using a pancake lens, of course.

Marketing and the media are a hobby of mine, and it does help no end, there is an old saying “He who pays the Piper calls the tune” I think that is how it goes.
But anyway, apologies again if I came across wrong, with retrospect there should have been a few more smileys/winks in my initial post!
I know it goes on this “I’ll scratch your back” Business’s have been doing it for years.
MP’ have just been caught at it, been paid for favourable reports.
In my mind it is corruption no more no less.
Getting back to so called reviews in the photographic media, I could almost guarantee if I were to pay mega bucks on advertising with the mag the front page would have a very large Pentax K-7 on the front rather than the other one. (I had to say the other one because it is a dirty word on here:wink
