Just seen this whilst doing my regular Jessops trawl:

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/products/Sigma/500mm%20f4.5%20EX%20DG%20(Pentax%20AF)-2274/Show.html

Seems like a good idea, if you've got the money!

Just bought one! See how it does on eBay. Doubt there's one in Europe for the same money.

That does seem quite cheap to me. Gonna have to check the finances as I am very tempted, enough to even use the K-7 fund!

Greynolds, did you really just buy one? ! Did they give you any indication on delivery time?

I'm quite excited about using it on the K7 when SRS ships It'll be fun shooting HD videos through it

The price is about £800 less (including shipping and taxes) than I paid when I imported mine last year from B&H.

Why do they charge more for fixed lenses compared to zooms.... surely the zooms with more elements are dearer to produce. For the original price you could have almost bought FOUR Bigmas

There's a big demand now days for fixed lenses in the 300-600m range. They could sell a hell of a lot more if they just reduced the prices.

Bigger and better glass. The bigma is f/6.3 at 500mm, this lens is f/4.5 - that difference is very significant when shooting wildlife under less that ideal conditions, and you can shoot wide-open, whereas the bigma needs to be stopped down to gain the equivalent sharpness (I've had the bigma and the little-bigma).

I have often wondered that myself, I would have thought a zoom is much more involved to manufacture than a prime, but prices don't reflect that. :

I guess it comes down to demand for an optically superior prime rather than production costs, that dictate price.

John - fair enough. However, this sort of thing has been put in classifieds in the past and it does seem to be a good way of giving members a "heads-up"! Cheers.

For those lucky people with one of these beasts how fast is the focusing given that it does not have SDM/HSM?

Yes, but unfortunately Classifieds was becoming very messy as it started to stray, so we're now back to basics. It can still be clearly seen here, so I hope it enjoys its new home!

Arrived today.

I hate to tell you, but this may have been the only one that price. The rest state 'to order'. I've bought end-lots from Jessops before and depite ordering large quantities I've only received one or two, then found no more are available.

Of course it could be that Sigma are getting rid of these and dropping the price, but even so I still hope to make a profit. Now to hide it from the other half.

Did it say it was in stock when you ordered, as I've just done it and it says special order upto 28 days delivery.
