You can get avira free, just google 'free avira' and it'll show you theofficial down load site.

Avira is free for home use only and doesn't hog the system at start up.

No I don't work for them.

All of which makes me think it's not so bad I never got very far with Windows 7 and now use Ubuntu Linux....

Using AV programs is like having about 5 padlocks on every door in your house, and having to undo them and do them up each time you move from room to room. They bog down a machine far too much.

I just use a fire wall.

I have Avast and the only time I know it's there is when it tells me, in a loud American voice, 'Virus database has been updated!!!!' Which usually makes me jump out of my skin.

I have a firewall as well Smeggy, but that doesn't pick up infected mail.

Pentaxophile - you can turn the voice off. Like you it made me jump, and really got annoying. My husband choose the female voice option, but I like a silent computer so along with all the Windows noises it had to go.

If you come across a suspicious file under 20MB you can
submit it to :
http://virusscan.jotti.org/en
and they will scan it while you wait (Free) with 19 Virus
Scanners. If they have already scanned it you get the result
straight away.

Kaspersky seems to be the most reliable.

I have had a look on the net, and it seems that Kaspersky is quite highly rated, but it has only had one mention here, surprisingly?
Best Regards, Larry.

I don't think they do a free version, but it's often given away for 12 months with Bank Accounts etc. It is about the best, but that's not saying much!

I'm biased. There are better and worse AVs out there....

I started getting repeated crashes from the latest version of AVG, so I switched to Microsoft's Security Essentials. It may be by MS, but it's very good, and knows when to speed up (when you're not using the computer), and when to slow down (when you are).

So there is no discernible overhead.

It's very annoying seeing all the perfectly good clean programs being reported by AV scanners as infected At least Kapersky have a good setup for reporting, testing and correcting these. I don't think AVG has and would be surprised if MS have.

It doesn't fill you with confidence when you look through the list of false positives. In fact you wonder if there is any point bothering at all

I believe Kaspersky work with a list and keep it update online if a lot of users say a program is to be trusted you don't get any warning.
With most installs or .exe files it gives you a notice the first time you start them is ask you if the file is to be trusted, there you have 3 options out of my head.
Thrusted, some sort of sandbox mode and not to be trusted.
