Southern Comfort with lime..........Think you may have missed something out of your upbringing.
I was brought up on beer and cider, no whisky in sight... not my fault! And a slight amount of pear vodka and other dubious spirits...
Also, it was the cheapest at some point and it tastes great with gigner beer...
Whatever my Dad's got in the house...

So how come with all of the modern navigation aids, a sodding great lighthouse and miles of empty seas some berk parks 62m of ironmongery on the Farne Islands?
Massive solar storm could have something to do with it. Get outside now and see the aurora!
.

That's no excuse, just imagine trying that one on dry land ---- "I'm sorry officer I didn't see the traffic island, I was looking at the sky".

Whatever happend to the duty watch?

Solar storms screw up GPS navigation devices. Modern ships are computer controlled for the most part, linked to satellites. Solar storm screws that up, even briefly it takes a long time to move/stop a big ship.

Is that not more of a reason to have someone looking out of the window.
I don't know how far above the sea the control room is but if we assume 50ft then the horizon is about 9 miles.
Any height to the island would increase this distance accordingly, so surely this would be much further than the stopping distance let alone distance needed to steer out of the way.

International Regulations For the Prevention Of Collisions at Sea

Rule 5 Lookout

Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper lookout by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.

Includes preventing collisions with islands too

Is the cargo worth salvaging?

Container(s) of Pentax kit
Shiny new toys (more or less anything is acceptable)
Alcohol (shades of whiskey galore).

ie
Is it worth me travelling 200 odd miles up country?

Just out of curiosity

Whats with all the red links scattered through most threads. They appear on the face of it to be something the poster is refering to but then turn out to be nothing but advertising (often nothing to do with the thread in any way)

Maybe the captain read this thread and decided to try some of the strange cocktails on offer?

The worst thing I saw was in San Francisco where the locals were drinking a mix of lager and Guinness. Much to the consternation of the Irish barman

What red links are you referring to? That statement is unfortunately too vague to be useful, so do please let me have a specific example.

The vessel on the Farnes is hardly a super ship. It`s a flipping toy, so putting the brakes on is hardly an issue. Parking on the Farnes meant she was well out of the shipping lanes. I really hope there are no pollution problems and if there are then the guilty persons should make personal reparations. Well! they are my views! Now wheres me after tea snifter?
Enjoy life
