This particular end of the world has little to do with religion and all to do with the Mayan calender, New Age beliefs and nutcases. They always involve nutcases of course.

Well let's not be too hard on the Mayans, it's what people have done with their calendar. As Gwyn said, nothing to do with religion, or we wouldn't be discussing it!
What I understand is that it's just the end of the fourth Mayan cycle as they measured time. Perhaps they never got round to starting on the fifth, as it was a long time in the future. We may even have miscounted it over the centuries - that often happens.

That was my reading of it - just like when you buy a car and they print the service book with ten pages for you to get stamped, doesn't mean the car will expire after that. Not quite the same, I grant you, but that kind of thing. Perhaps the Mayans fancied Friday afternoon off, so just after lunch they sat around and agreed that they'd done enough, perhaps start again next week, then forgot.

Perhaps to the Mayan's it was a new beginning as opposed to the end but that they never documented it - an early version of a paperless office perhaps::

Query,
Did the Mayans take into account the calendar changes made by Pope Gregory?
If not it may already have happened or will be ages into the new year

Surely we would have noticed if the world had ended. Unless everyone was too busy watching the X Factor to notice?

(Incidentally, I will now have to hold Gwyn personally responsible if the world doesn't end and I have a hangover!)
I merely suggested keeping a bottle or two of wine handy, just in case.
Didn't say it would happen, or even what to do with the wine.
Now I'm off to Pic de Bugarach to see if I can get past them pesky French police and onto that mountain.
Or maybe I should go to Devil's Tower instead?
