It doesn't advise that. It simply advises that KB2686509 has not been installed. No reason given.

I've been on to the link you provided but the only 'useful' information I can find is
"You receive this message if any registered keyboard layout files are not in the %Windir%System32 folder. In this scenario, the computer is incompatible with the security updates"

So I have a PC which is incompatable with an update and still no idea how to fix it (I didn't realise it was broke). How do I find out what files are needed and where do I find the appropriate files to install into the above

regards
Bernard
The answer is here. Unfortunately it is not a simple fix and requires registry changes.

And rural Staffordshire isn't much better at a theoretical maximum of 5.6MB down and 0.30MB up. Practical speeds are often much much slower

Thanks Woodworm/Greynolds999 for the link (actually the same one I think)

The problem is most of it is outside my comfort zone. I followed some of the pages included links and finishe up with a Mr Fixit, which didn't change the situation. I eventually found a logfile that had 1 entry - kbd101.dll. Presumeably this is the missing one? Within the system32 folder there are 98 kbd*.dll files and kbd101b.dll & kbd101c.dll already so it looks like plain kbd101.dll has been superceded anyway.

Why can't Microsoft, to ensure that my PC won't be deficient of a file, simply include it in their KB. The PC has worked for the best part of 10 years without it and the keyboard appears to work ko dotay.

Have you remapped any of your keys?

oops

You do have the option of hiding the update. The real problem is that it is now an old operating system and Microsoft are close to washing their hands of it.

You might find someone who can remote-connect into your system but it's difficult when you have a slow connection and are using XP.

My advice is to ignore it and wait for it to go away - this is not as daft as it sounds. Once Microsoft have had enough people complaining they will update the fix to get around the problem and re-issue it. It might take a while though.

Hi Lee,

There are a number of answers to that question :-

1 - Keh?
2 - If I knew what you were asking, I wouldn't know how
3 - If I have it's been by accident. Then the question is how do I unmap them
But the simple answer is :-
4 - No

If your question was prompted by the last few words of my previous post then I was being silly about the keyboard working today, and nothing is actually wrong.

North Suffolk (Lowestoft) wasn't much better and now here in Newbiggin we are one step faster than smoke signals, most of the time.

Well I'm supposed to be on 10 MB and get...

... 9.49MB download speed!

The upload has almost trebled from a meagre 512 KB rated, 430 actual, to 1.1 MB!!

And that's the base Virgin package.

HG I have heard that some cities are now working on the installation 100-120mb in the next year or so.

One of them is not too far from you. So you should get upto at least 2.5mb at home

Seriously, all these speeds can be achieved and delivered if only customers would make a fuss.

The biggest problem our way is the telephone exchange.

BT have no plans to update the local one until 2020!

Which means were stuck on very old copper wire and mechanical switches limiting any alternative to Optical cable connection to a miniscule 512k.

By using Virgin's inherited (they bought Yorkshire Cable who did all the hard work!)optical service I could get 100MB plus...

... but being a Yorkshireman...

Got to say it's the upload speed I got it for. Up to 20Mbs which is really good for VPN and uploading photos.

Funny that my upload speed now is faster than my download speed was a couple of months ago.

We just had 10Mb fibre optic installed, for the same price we paid fo 2Mb. Trouble is, it's slower than it was when we had 2Mb.

I've got Virgin 10MB and it's rubbish.... slow speeds.... dropped
