Surprise, surprise you're right about the haggis, Algy! According to that font of knowledge, Wikipedia "The first known written recipe for a dish of the name (as 'hagese'), made with offal and herbs, is in the verse cookbook Liber Cure Cocorum dating from around 1430 in Lancashire"Haggis is an English dish...

We can't say definitively where haggis originated, but the first (known) written recipe provides no evidence at all.

Hardly anyone seems to know what Lancashire Hotpot really is!
Every cookbook you look at has something different and Sainsbury's and Tesco's have had different variations out non of which bear much resemblance to what people from around Wigan/St Helens areas would accept as a Hotpot. Around there it has to have a pie-crust (usually suet pastry) on it and that is by far the most important part You can't have pies without a crust
Hotpot suppers are a big thing around Lancashire with many outside catering businesses set up to supply them.

Kegeree used to be a staple breakfast dish for the landed gentry in Scotland, many of whom had retired there after military service in India, kedgeree having reputedly been an enduring favourite in the officers' messes in India. The recipe being unfamiliar to the local cook on the average Scottish shooting estate would have had to be committed to paper, which may be why the recipe was found here. Some nitwit claimed that kedgeree was a Scottish dish because the first recipe was found in Scotland.

Come to think of it, perhaps that is also why a recipe for haggis came to light in Lancashire- such a demand for it from Scots on holiday there in the 1400s

I`m keeping out of this one !!!
All food of the Terroir or "local" food is individual to the area and the produce available and the cook - generalisations are usually accepted to be the norm - however, I have seen two "TOP" chefs describe Pommes Gratin Dauphinoise recently as containing CHEESE - not in my lifetime mateys - perhaps they should go to the Dauphine region !! The Savoyarde region uses cheese and bouillon.

I remember 1962-63 just about.
1979 was a cold winter, but I was glad to be back in the UK then. My second son was born on February 15th, which was a bitterly cold day, but until two months before we had been living in the Dutch countryside. If we had still been there I think the farmer would have had to deliver my son - the snow there was so deep it was up to the windows on the cow shed - some 2 metres up.
1981-2 was bad with all that snow. We couldn't open our back door for the snow - which was a pain since we used the back door the most. In December 1981 my husband was racing the snow back from the Netherlands to Wantage, and just about made it.
In January he was away again and more snow fell. I was trapped, school was cancelled for two days, the milk couldn't get through. Our neighbour, who had a Land Rover did the shopping for all the neighbours which was a life safer with three young children in the house, the youngest was only 7 months at the time.
We've had plenty of really cold winters since moving here, but I can cope with them. It's snow which does for me.
So why am I going back to Norway

The mystery of the vanishing coffee cup.
I went to pick up my empty espresso cup to take it into the kitchen, but I dropped it. I heard it fall, and it didn't sound to have broken but it fell behind some junk waiting to be sorted.
So I moved the junk, sorting some as I went. No cup. Crawled on hands and knees to see if it had rolled under something. No cup. Moved furniture. No cup.
It has vanished.
Now I know it is small, and made of glass but still I should be able to see it, but I can't. Very very odd.
