Lets talk about Stick Insects. My granddaughter keeps hers at our house as Mum is not keen on them. She collects the eggs and recently we have had 14 new arrivals. Any one want some. We have at least 50 eggs and she wont let me get rid as she wants to see how many hatch. Now this is pointless.

Stick insects change sex so they can breed.

My good lady brought two home for the kids when they were much younger.

"Don't worry they're both female" she was told.

Seven years and numerous generations later we finally got rid of them when the central heating failed in the middle of winter.

never again!!!

Oh yes!
They kept escaping and making their way into the attic, where we sleep!

I am not the one to give input on the subject of BBQs ---- sorry folks --I would not want boozy people all over my garden or "good" food destroyed by amateurs who think that just because they have a blue + white chef`s/butcher`s apron on , a large pair of kitchen tongs , and a silly hat , they are everybody`s answer to outdoor cuisine !

Cook it inside and eat it outdoors by all means - but in this country I see no point in spending a small fortune on a BBQ which might get used a couple of times a year.Ignorance leads to badly/undercooked/overcooked rubbish which ( because of the alcohol intake ) is usually consumed to the detriment of health or digestion.

Having said that , if the "cook" really does know what they are doing AND they know how to operate a BBQ properly AND they do sufficient imaginative preparation , then I am happy to go along and join in the festivities - especially if the beers are English and the wines RED.

Off to Uckfield tomorrow for the 2nd birthday bash so if it goes quiet for the next few days do not worry !! We are away from a computer until Wednesday.

Have a great Bank Holiday if you are having one , good week-end to everyone else.

We've discussed dogs a few pages back - Stefans desire for a Saarlooswolfhond amongst other things.

My middle son had a pet rat. One day he came to me - there's something wrong with my rat. I have a look - she is in the process of giving birth to a total of 12 ratlets.

Luckily the pet shop bought the ratlets from us, and so we made a profit out of the rat. She lived a long and happy life and was a lovely pet, until she bit me when the vet finally put her to sleep.

The reason it's not a bank hol and few people fly the flag is simple- people just don't care or know who St George even is. And I don't think they're missing much tbh.

We bought our grandson two female hamsters that were only days/weeks old. It turned out each one was already pregnant. I thought it was a novel take on "Buy one get one free"

All this talk of St George made me wonder who the patron saint of the Netherlands is. Turns out, according to http://saints.sqpn.com that there are three .
I had expected St Boniface, but no he's not one of them. Maybe being murdered in Friesland didn't help.

St Willibrord, a Northumbrian lad, is one of them, his day is November 7th. St Bavo of Gent is another. His day is October 1st, and the last saint is Plechelm, another Northumbrian, and his day is July 15th.

So if the Dutch were to get another day off (which they aren't) I'd vote for either Plechelm or Bavo if they want an excuse for it.

well, we've been out in the rain to the huge collection of drunk people in the middle of town. Today is "vappu", which is essentially an excuse to party as hard as possible, followed by going into town with your "A Level" cap on and meet the world, drink Champagne, picnic in the park.. that kind of thing. Summer season officially open. I can't get into it.... my daughter thinks it's great - lots of silly hats, wigs, costumes etc.

as far as cooking outside is concerned - wood, please. Real stuff. Birch. We get lots of practice at the summer houses. One doesn't have an oven worth the name (no electricity) and the other we simply prefer the fireplace.
