The received wisdom is that rail travel is less oil-greedy, and I can't see any reason to doubt that moving from long haul holiday flights to more local holiday destinations reached by train or car, and moving from short haul business flights to rail journeys, would reduce energy consumption and emissions quite a bit.
Yes you're truly right there but if you plan to go to somewhere not in west Europe a plain might be better, more direct routes and all those things and it saves you time.

If you have some basic physics you know that if you want to have something goes twice as fast you need four times more energy and if you then compare that a plane flies 4 times as fast but use only 2,4 times more fuel, it's quite an achievement.

I've always preferred paper aeroplanes when I need to travel. The cost of travel is a lot less this way (often I've managed to skip most of the costs altogether with some clever planning) as is the amount of nasty emissions and pollutants (unless the pilot or passenger has eaten some hot chili with lots of beans). Also one can enjoy the comforts of lots of passenger footwell and good fresh air! There are some negative sides, namely the speed of travel is directly linked to the pilots own speed, energy level and skill/luck and this might make long distances feel like it would last forever to get there. Also some people might find this form of travel too strange. Not recommended for the most impatient passengers.

This thread contains so many valid points that I doubt it is fair to call it pointless anymore. I suggest that we end the thread and get on with life

I have heard that high speed trains (TGV, Eurostar and the like) are only better for the environment than planes if they are full. Now at the moment due to lack of planes they are full, but normally that is rarely the case.
It is the same with slower, normal trains compared to cars too.

I can't be bothered to look for the data but it is out there on the net somewhere.

Terry, the fact that this pointless thread has raised many points may be true but it is still a good thread. Random thoughts and discussions are I think interesting and sometimes funny. No one says you have to read all or any of it.

I thought we were going for 200 pages. We must discuss this to find the truth, because The Truth Is Out There, or so I've heard...

Bad week, had to mowed the lawn, pressure jet the patio, wash the car, go to Tesco and missed the political debate on TV!
Need a break now so off to Westmorland for a couple of days to recover.

Tom you must be exhausted after all that. Enjoy your time in Westmorland.

We've just had a big bag of gravel delivered, so I shall be shovelling that in a bit. Could be worse stuff to shovel of course. That arrives next week from my DIL's horses .
