I just don't understand why the 1930s were sepia!

Didn't they have any colour in the UK, the US had Kodachrome (or an earlier version) back then!

We need to realise just how expensive colour was in those days. Even magazines in the 1950s found it very hard to afford colour separations. So much so that the same image would appear in several magazines all over Europe, presumably to share the cost.

The 1960s magazine Colour Photography is even then mostly in black and white.

It's weird seeing colour footage from the 1940s as your subconscious absorbs the idea that history took place in mono. Now I find myself looking at old photos and wondering what colour that ship was, whether that tanker was a bright colour, etc. I know some early railways had eye-searingly vibrant paintwork, which hasn't passed to us other than in drawings and instructions as the experimenters with colour photography weren't interested in them.

My eneloop batteries have arrived but I am having trouble getting them into the camera.

LOL, that is funny. I am waiting for some new sets to arrive so I have spares for my flashes. I got them from a seller on amazon and the only thing that worries me is the silly number of counterfeits. Maybe should have bought from SRS?

I'm not convinced Amazon sellers would be daft enough to attempt to fob you off with counterfeits. Thing is, if you're not happy with something you buy there then Amazon reserve the right to take the money back from the seller and refund you. They'd also be very likely to boot the seller from their site for selling counterfeit goods.

I have noticed that rechargeable batteries can be thicker than single use ones for a given battery size. I have an old Jessops motor wind which is fine with single use AAs but something of a trap for rechargeables - they go in fine, then you end up loosening screws to get them out again!

With the battery flat the electrons are at lower pressure so the battery should be smaller.

Why would I be putting flat batteries in a motor wind anyway? I was putting them in fully charged and they were a tight fit.

After thirty years in electronics I am baffled - people refer to batteries as flat when they are demonstrably still round.

I have for her sins a young student working with me me at the moment.

I tried to explain to her about smoke theory^. She looked at me as if I was daft.


*Smoke theory - it is smoke that makes electronics work. This can be proved by the fact that if the smoke leaks out of an electronic circuit, it stops working.
