Enjoy your retirement Colin.

885 days till my other half retires. Maybe.
That means 885 days before poverty hits .

Buy everything before you retire, thats what we have done. More time for taking photo's in 45 day time (or DIY as the boss said)

I've no chance of retiring!

The government are going to make me work longer for even less and, if that's not bad enough, they're trying to stuff my pension as well!!!

I don't think there'll be such a thing as retirement when I get there!

Problem is, the retirement age hasn't taken account of the fact that people live much longer now than they used to. In the old days you were lucky if you lasted five years after giving up work, now people commonly live for ten or twenty years afterwards. There just isn't the money in the system to pay for that, so either the retirement age has to go up or people need to pay more into pensions.

When I joined the council 23 years ago the wage was poor, but the long term benefit was promising.

I had a good pension to look forward too.

Now, having paid, yes paid it's not a free scheme like Whitehall gets, I find I'm going to have to pay even more for less payback!

I intended leaving the council when my pension would pay a good monthly sum, getting a lower paid job and freeing the council post for somebody younger and fitter.

Not now, I can't afford too, and if the condems carry on I'll need to work 'till I'm 80!

Fat chance!

On the plus side, delivered curry for one tonight.
Cheers, HG

I empathise with you HG, I keep telling everyone that I full intend to be an embittered NCP car park attendant when I'm considered to old or senile, reeking revenge on any hedge fund manager that parks his perk anywhere near me.

My husband worked for a Research Council in the UK, and had a good solid civil service style pension to look forward too. No money while he was working but a worthwhile pension - to which he contributed btw.
However he didn't stay there, we moved here. Two jobs neither with a pension fund, and not enough time in the Netherlands for a full state pension means not a lot of dosh. Plus a house that is unsellable - the market here is totally stagnant, and we still have a mortgage to pay.
He does get a small pension from his research council job - we are saving that as it comes in. And we have a couple of insurance policies due to pay out when he retires, but the tax man will want his share of those.

My husband wants to work on past 65, not full time but on a project basis, and his boss seems amenable to that at the moment so that is one small glimmer of hope.
Meanwhile we are buying the things we will need, and are enjoying some good holidays while we can still pay for them. One major purchase will be a car when he retires - he has a company car now, and I have an ancient old Kangoo.
The K5 will be my last new camera I suspect so I am really hoping it is a goodie.

I look at my sons and worry about them. One has a pension but the other two don't, the oldest is self employed and barely scraping a living. His boat is his pension. The youngest still doesn't have a permanent job and he will be 30 next year.

But carpe diem chaps carpe diem! Worrying about the future doesn't help - it may never happen (Mayan calender and all that tosh :lol.

Good luck to your husband Gwyn, I don't want to retire early, at 55, but would like to semi-retire at 65.

Not 75 as this lot in power want!

The plus side is the house is paid for and I can afford to save some of my wage, although a new car could be on the horizon. How far will a Xsara Picasso go?

It currently has 90,000 on the clock, and climbing. The boss uses it for work (she's a Community Physiotherapist, on a 21 hour contract) so the miles rack up.
