Considering the nearest to "India" my missus has ever been is a pencil eraser - she makes the greatest curries - always with fresh ginger, lime, chili, coconut milk, spices, herbs and hot enough to keep the most virulent germs at bay - yummy.........................

I prefer Thai curries to Indian ones. In fact I prefer Thai food to Indian any day.

Can be very "wet" Gwyn - the first couple of places Emma took us in London put me off - they were more like soups/broths than what I like in a curry.

Having said that the ingredients are great and form part of our daily diet whatever we cook eg:- Fresh Ginger,Garlic,Chili,Capsicums,Noodles,Rice,Limes,Lemons,Nuts.

If we go to Maastricht for a few days we always visit our favourite Thai restaurant there. The first time I went I destroyed my taste buds, but I am used to it now and love Thai food. I cook a lot of Thai dishes.

My husband like Indian food, but is out of luck here - not too many Indian restaurants around. There is one in our nearest big town, and a good one, but we tend not to go.
I do usually give in and go for a curry with him when we are in the UK.

They think it costed $3 million and 10 programmers working six months to make it.

When in Paris a few years ago we walked past an Indian restaurant. On hearing we were English the doorman asked where we were from.

When we said Bradford he offered to do a 'proper' curry like his brother did in their curry house back home.

We knew the mentioned eatery but declined his offer, instead going for a Chinese.

Coming from here we tend to avoid curries when on holiday. They tend to disappoint us all to often.
Cheers, HG

We had a curry in Olympia, Washington. I didn't like it. My other half thought it was so-so, but the yanks all seem to love the food.

To add insult to injury they insisted on a DCC charge on our Credit card .

My brother in Derby took us to a Pakistani café which was rather good. I shall have to visit the Bradford cousins and try a "proper" curry one time, but I don't think I shall be converted.

The balti houses in Birmingham are good, IMHO. Not just the food but great atmosphere, all of a hubba.

The curry house in Whitby is pretty good (if anyone is staying overnight). Scotland is getting much better for curry, but still not as good as northern England. And if you want a really good saag you have to go to London.

But on my travels I have struggled to find good Indian restaurants. There are a couple in New York and a number in Ireland, but I have never found anything in the rest of Europe that is better than 'adequate'.

The big problem is I love spinach, but it has to be fresh. If it's frozen, it's rotten.

It's probably down to colonialism. As Britain colonised India we have a long history of curry, which was reinforced (and improved) when mass immigration began. At least we've stopped putting swede, raisins, and "curry powder" in it now - none of which would be found in proper Indian recipes!

There is a theory that chicken tikka masala was invented in Glasgow. Apparantly it's the most popular take-away dish in the UK . link

But I'm strictly a lamb man, although I have had venison and buffalo curry in the past.
