Has one of your fish suddenly put on a lot of weight?

On a slightly more "realistic" note, a river/lake bird with a relatively long beak - like a heron (or egret - not sure if we get those in the UK though) - might be able to perch on/near the netting and spear the fish as they pass under the hole.

Are you sure they've been eaten? Any chance they might have died and sunk to the bottom? If definitely eaten, you need a camera trap to get photographic evidence of the offender. A basic one that's OK for garden use isn't expensive. You might be surprised at what goes on in your garden (and that's after you and Mrs HG have gone inside :wink.

Yes we do. The little egret is now as common as muck in some areas. The great white egret is rare but slowly increasing (magnificent bird, see this thread). Neither are likely visitors to a garden though.

Egrets are becoming established in the UK. There was one at WWT Washington a couple of years ago

Thx all for confirming a bird that I saw a couple of years here in West London on a "pond" on a building site - I thought it was an egret but could not be sure at the time.

that was my thought, a bird of some sort, but the pond is close to the house and awkward for anything large to gat at.

The mesh guard is also not damagaed.

I suspect a local cat, but how is a mystery.

Same thing happened to my fish a year or so ago, I blamed the local cat population but then reckoned it was a young heron who somehow managed to grab carp through a narrow feed slot, pull them through and leave them on the patio. Something they do apparently.

The pond is now secure, we're away for a few weeks tomorrow so if the rest are still there when we return then....

Just seen a US B-2 Stealth Bomber fly over - and let's guess which lens I had on the camera? Was it a 400mm, or a 300mm, or the 60-250 that's been on the camera for the last few days? No - it was a 20mm

Never seen one of these before, it was quite low (I've always associated them with high level flights) with quite a distinctive engine rumble. Anyone know why it would be over here at present?

I can think of one reason but I might be considered conspiracy theorist

Shame about the 20mm though. What you might have given for another '0'. It's sods law I'm afraid, it never rains but what it pours whenever you leave your brolly at home!
