Good to see we have left ourselves some latitude of action. The EU is why. Stopping European wars is what it was designed to do, and it has succeeded wonderfully.

My personal anti Europe feeling came about more or less when I started going to Ireland about fifteen years ago. At the time the roads were in a shocking state, but everywhere I looked they were being rebuilt and there were signs saying "75% paid for by the EEC". I have never seen a sign like that in England.
I also used to work for a large french company (not my fault, they bought us out) We were required to work 10 hours a day, but when it came to paying us, they pretended that we only worked 7.5 in accordance with their rules. One of their managers in france actually fetched up in court for even asking if any of his staff would work overtime. They also sent around a memo one year saying we would not be allowed to observe the 2 minutes silence.
I guess there are some trading advantages - I hope someone would have pulled us out by now if not.
What I really resent is when they expect us to abide by their rules in preference to ours, especially when often they do not do themselves.
Long may we remain a separate entity from the united states of Europe.

Good grief, is this thread still going??
Just back from my hols so will have quite a bit of catching up to do here I can see.
Last year we came back to a broken espresso machine, which was annoying but I can (just about) live without espresso. This year I put a load of dirty washing in the machine to be greeted by alarming clicks, all the lights flashing on and off and an ominous pop. So two weeks worth of smelly washing removed, and husband investigating, but it sounds expensive. . No launderettes for miles either. I shall have to call on a son I can see.

Oggy how have rules in French have to do with rules in the EU or the UK, sorry but I don't see the connection.
Gwyn, hopefully your son would be so kind to help you out ^^
Oh yeah espresso is something I can't be out either for a long time.

Hello Dave, made it through another day. Charged up my batteries he. he. Had hedge clippings in brown lumpy bread for dinner, more hedge clippings and sardines in a salad for tea. Wasting away! Got a result from Lincoln crem. Seems that some year plots were indicated by letters and others numbers. Without a plan there was no knowing, more local government missmanagement! Oops head for naughty step, made political statement.

Don't worry about that statement Cedric, I work for a Local authority that Can't tell it's elbow from it's ...other bit.
Just spent the last few hours sorting out plumbing!
I put a screw through a pipe so had to repair that.
When the water was turned back on the attic toilet cistern overflowed and flooded the bedroom below.
Everything seems OK, although I'll have to call the insurance in the morning and see if we're covered for what damage there is.

Just a thought HG - why don't they make toilets so that if the water level in the cistern goes too high, the toilet flushes?
As things stand, the overflow will cope with a leak, but not a full open failure.
