I'm not a pet owner, but I bet it's very hard.

Huge sympathies Gwyn, I have had to do it twice, most recently twelve years ago. I buried my nose in her fur and can still recall the lovely doggy smell all these years later but just can't face having to go through it again so now dogless.

Thanks everyone.
I am not sure I could go through this again.
I'm not sure which is worst, finding one dog unexpectedly dead one morning, as I did 5 years ago, or watching the life leave your other dog at the hand of your vet.
I know it was the right thing to do, I know he had a wonderful life, but damn it hurts.
The house is so quiet.

I feel for you Gwyn.
We are back at the start, one year on. Why did we get a dog that thinks and never sleeps....

Sorry to hear this Gwyn. Yes we do the right thing but it still feels so awful. Just had our beautiful old dog, Timber, put to sleep.

I have lost some furry best friends over the years, and at the moment one of our cats has been missing over a week and we (and his brother) are missing him terribly - I've told my other half no more pets - it's too upsetting when they are gone!

It was necessary Gwyn, else you would not have gone through with it.
I went through it with a cat (more the wife & kids pet than mine). It had to be done and I yarped all the way back from the vets. It was still better than the cat suffering.

Our sympathies, Gwyn. They are like family - one grieves for a long time. We fostered a "Westie" for the last four years of her life. When she had to have her suffering ended, two years ago, we buried her at the foot of an old apple tree at the end of our garden. We still say a few words to her whenever we pass her little grave.

Thanks again everyone. He was 35kg of hairy happiness and the house is so empty without him.
On a different topic can anyone recommend a website for finding camper/motorhome sites in the UK? Campsites, camperstops, whatever. Anyone used Britstops?
Feeling the need to get away for a while and see how we are in the camper without said hairy happiness on board.
