Then of course there was Watneys Red Barrel. I was lucky to have been too young to drink then

We had Newcastle Breweries 'Star Bright' Unfortunately I was old enough. I can not forget the night I was invited to Vickers Armstrongs foreman's club. The conductor, on a single decker Northern bus holding on to my shoulders, as I leaned out of the front doors going down the road, shouting "That's it, get it up lad".

Thinking about it it should have put me off. But you have to preserver, don't you?

I often wonder if I'd be the man I am today if I hadn't discovered the dubious pleasure of strong drink, followed next day by strong pain killers, or a livener, just to take the edge off these days the drinks cabinet loses more to evaporation than imbibing

You were never the man you are today Stan

You don't get companies looking after their employees like they
used to Pilkingtons always had at least one pub at the
entrance to their factories.... so their employees could top
up without having to go too far This one's still
there, link but up for sale.... look at the factory at the back....
that's PB's

In the late '60s at Vickers I was posted to the Forge & Foundry Division as a draughtsman in the forge.

Then the forgemen, working the furnaces and the hammers, had a daily beer allowance which was collected from the pubs on Scotswood Road by the tea boys.

There was hell on when health and safety came in and said they had to drink saline solution for fluid replacement

Time for a brew (non alcoholic) and I've just heard the order "I'll have one if you're making one" translated "You better make me a cup of tea or else"

Pubs that only sell beer?

Now that's a nice idea...

.....non of those 20somethings ratted on vodka...

....just good old-fashioned beer, and more beer.....

....getting thirsty now, where's that bottle opener?

That's the problem. We talk about Pubs, then use a shop and a bottle opener

Because the pubs that are open are filled with 20 something getting ratted on vodka

Then you must be much younger than I am

When my missus and I were first together we were really hard up for cash and used to make a sort of 'homebrew' from a kit-in-a-tin.

One evening we were in a pub with friends, one of whom bought my wife a pint. Tasting it, she praised its interesting flavour, said how good it was, and asked what kind of beer she had been bought. "It's just Watneys Red Barrel" said our friends, looking blankly at her. We had got so used to our homebrew from a Boots tin kit that the lowest of pub beers tasted very special to us

Watney's Red Barrel was a great lunchtime drink!

To be fair it came out before draught lager and therefore only
had competition from 2-3% bitter most of which was horrible

I hate IPA, but oddly the best pint of beer I ever had was IPA from a
pub in Wigan about 1970. It was well known that the IPA at that pub
tasted better than it did from all other pubs in the same chain.
Must have had something to do with how the landlord managed his beer.

In the days of real draught beer from wooden barrels any publican visiting another pub would order the "ordinary" as it was called here, the reason being the slops always went back into the "Best Scotch" as it was 2d a pint more
A funnel, with holes at various heights in the spout, and filter paper to fit were available so the finings in the barrel were not "disturbed" All tricks of the trade to generate maximum profit.
