I'm completely with David on this. I've had the DAL for a couple of years and the plastic mount vs metal is a non-issue as far as I am concerned. It is a fantastic lens and while I accept the advantages sometimes of the quickshift, for me it is the only thing to consider bearing in mind the £100 price difference currently. ( I have both and am evaluating to decide which one to keep).

OTOH, my GX10 srvived a similar fall with a 10-20mm Sigma on the front to a wooden floor but the camera was entirely unscathed and the only "casualty" was the filter on the front - so your friend was very unlucky

BTW I'm really impressed with the 55-300mm from my testing in the 30 minutes of sun since I got it several weeks ago.
ISO800, f7.1, 1/1250s @150mm through LR
Some xmas deccies apropos nothing but nice and sharp, eh?
